Stress can make any student crumble. Growing up and becoming a well-rounded person includes learning stress management. I am embarking on a journey to become one with self and relieve stress. This program will cover not only yoga postures and routines but also nutrition and health.
Life is not always school, homework, or class. Mr. Mercedes, Assistant Director of Housing, asked Moe Abdelwhab to find some students willing to help him and his girlfriend move some furniture. I volunteered when Moe stopped me in the hallway and I am glad he did. The couple hours we spent helping were full of new knowledge, opportunities, and fun. Mr. Mercedes is a cool guy and is not only easy to talk to but he is very candid in his speach. It was a workout moving all the furniture but playing tennis for Morehouse keeps me in top shape. After we finished, they treated us to lunch. Great afternoon

#WAKEUPANDCHANGE — “DON’T GRIND YOUR GOALS, OR SMOKE YOUR SUCCESS”
The Resident Advisor program at Morehouse is top notch for 3 key reasons. We strive for excellence as the vision statement "in order to become a premiere collegiate housing and residential life" indicates but the level of involvement of Dean Washington in the management of this vision and the programs ability to mold leaders and shape responsible young men are the main 2 reason why this college has a premiere program
Happiness is a goal that everyone strives for. College and especially life will throw curve-balls that can significantly impact that goal. From time to time it is good to read some encouraging words or advice. That is why I posted some tips to facilitate success if grades are getting a student down, some warning signs of abuse if a boy/girlfriend/boo/significant other/"friend" actions are making a student unhappy, and some tips to improve communication that might help fix some relationship problems.
Food is an important part of life. Without sustenance we and all organisms would perish. I posted some info for people to become more aware of their diet and the ways it could be improved. The Suites are meant to be a transition into adult life because they feature kitchens and separate bedrooms. That means utilizing the stove more than ordering out. I want to promote buying food and making it last versus the expenses associated with to-go meals. Also posted are tips on how to save money on groceries and even a sample menu to create a balanced diet.
A Candle in the Dark: Speaker presentations. On Saturday of Founder's Week, six Renaissance men convened to spread some knowledge to us Morehouse Men in Training. The speakers covered topics and shared anecdotes from their lives that included friendship, mentorship, and personal strength
Resident Advisor Council Meeting. In Mays Hall Lounge/OHRL Office, RA's meet every other Tuesday. Mediated by Mr. Green and Dean Washington, RAC meetings are where a group of RA's decide and plan the RA socials and the RA summer and winter training. It also serves an important outlet for concerns/problems in the halls and those of the RA staff. Having direct access to Dean means issues can be handled quicker and important news can be passed on to other RAs more swiftly. I enjoy the meetings as they usually are quite funny
To enhance the efficiency of getting things fixed with in the suites. This way the residence can skip the middle man and go straight to the source. Also this is important because this way the director can be informed about what is being fixed and what is broken in the buildings.
Last night Alex and I hosted a program where we tried to teach our residents the different ways to tie a tie and how to have a successful interview. We also taught them how to dress appropriately. We were both amazed at how a few spelmanites came out to support as well.
Its internship season. What better way to celebrate the stress of interviews than a quick tutorial on how to tie tie knots, bow-ties, and when to wear either. Give-aways are always welcomed too. Well-dressed might be apart of the old regime's message but it was a universal value that all Morehouse Men should uphold.
Wednesday Janurary 30th, Dean Washington advised us to attend the King Lecture Series being presented by Dr. Louis Baldwin. He was interesting and talked mostly of a global perspective on Martin Luther King Jr. some anecdotes that I thought were noteworthy are: "The interconnectedness of reality leads one to realize the geographical challenge of making the world one in spirituality and brotherhood." "Hatred, ignorance, and greed are the inner barriers to peace around the world and racism, poverty, and war are the external barriers to peace" I thouroughly enjoyed the lecture and gained a new perspective on the way I perceive Dr.King
Breakfast after the Inauguration
Had an interesting morning with my roommate. DeMarcus Williams woke me up at 9:30 a.m to start watching President Obama's inauguration. He didn't intentionally wake me up but I forgot to lock my door and as a light sleeper it was enough noise to wake me up when he opened the door. I have a rather curious reaction when awakened this way. I tend to sit straight up and throw my arms in the air. After laughing he changed the channel and we watched the proceedings while i straightened my room. The inauguration was great. All the fanfare and seeing who was in attendance made for some interesting tv while doing homework. The president's speech was full of promise. He made a bold statement about love being equal no matter the recipient(paraphrase, his was better) and gays getting the same rights to marriage. I can definitely say that 2013 is shaping into a great year already. I am very much glad that the Aztecs got it wrong in their cycle of calendars...digressing. What better than a commercial for all you can eat pancakes at IHOP for cash strapped college students to see when deciding what to eat. We went to the IHOP on Ponce de Leon. If you head that way look out for The Lucky Exchange. It is small but nice thrift store. It is on the same side of the street as Mary Mac's Tea Room but across the street with this Caribbean restaurant. The wait was not long even though the place was full. I decided to give up all liquids besides water for my new years resolution. I plan to go for 4 months then add juice but I am making a commitment to being much healthier. After ordering our food we got into a discussion on racism in the medical field, stereotypes and preconceived notions based on tattoos and dreads, and personal strength. Without going into too much detail, Demarcus is one the strongest people I have met. He has overcome quite bit including more than a few deaths of family member while in college. I learned a thing or two today.
