Leo: *is within reach* Adam: I have to touch him
Do you see it?
Yall.
Yall, do you SEE the pattern?
The fucking PATTERN of Adam's behavior. UGH.
I've brought this up before? But Adam Schürk is terminally fucking incapable of asking for what he needs directly. He cannot fucking do it.
He can only offer someone else the thing he wants in a way that delivers him echoes of the thing he wants/needs, and hope that by offering? He will get the thing - like he did when he asked Esther to switch at the fooseball table.
What Adam Is Directly Communicating When He Touches Leo : "Hey Leo you okay?"
What Adam Is Indirectly Communicating When He Touches Leo: I am reassuring and grounding myself through contact with you because I am physically incapable of asking for ANYTHING for myself because of how I was raised.
Because each and EVERY one of these scenes is coming off a fucking conflict/duress scene for Adam. So what does he do? He puts his hands on Leo in a way that communicates "Hey Leo, you okay?"
But it's not for Leo. It's for Adam. He's the one who needs to be checked on. But he doesn't have the emotional or social skills to ask Leo to check on him. So he checks on Leo instead, because he can do that. He can protect and care, because that he he has practice doing from childhood with his parents - which we see from how he takes care of his mother and his father and with Leo, though he has next no experience being cared for, which we also see from his parents and Leo. He knows how to give, he's trained to give, but he doesn't know how to receive, even though he desperately wants to. And we KNOW it's for him because at the 2 restaurants. Leo was FINE so why would Adam need to check? He doesn't. And at the hooligan crime scene and at car wreck? Adam had just pushed Leo away and they were fighting. There was no reason for him to act like that if they were fighting/post rejection. This shit is for Adam. Every time.
Indirect communicating, motherfucker.
Use your words, you broken boy.
All of that's communicated with context clues provided but repeated, consistent physical choices. Always the same interaction. Shoulder slap at first interaction. Always the same. Casual. Brief. Calm and friendly. It could be shallow. It would be - if you didn't know the situational and emotional context Adam was coming from in each scene prior. It should be, if it wasn't a pattern that has repeated four times over four years with the same emotional gravity each time. Mein fucking GOTT Daniel is SUCH a good actor yall I cannot believe it.
Alternative readings for The Body Keeps the Score
hi, i'm a practicing mental health therapist and a writer here on tumblr dot com. the body keeps the score by dr. bessel van der kolk has a couple issues with it, primarily in the author's very much cishet male eurocentric approach to trauma and the graphic nature of the book. here's a list of some books about trauma that i've found preferable to the body keeps the score in addressing trauma and how the body holds onto trauma. i've included pdf links for ones i could find:
HEALING TRAUMA by peter a. levine. this one is a far less denser read than the body keeps the score while still providing solid education on trauma symptomatology. it even comes with mp3 access to exercises to address somatic symptoms.
MY GRANDMOTHER'S HANDS by resmaa menakem. this one discusses how racism in america is ingrained in our society and how intergenerational racial trauma is ingrained in our bodies.
INFLAMED by rupa marya & raj patel. this was written in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the structural injustices in medicine that caused so many racial disparities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and how trauma caused by our political systems affect the different systems of the body.
THE POLITICS OF TRAUMA: SOMATICS, HEALING, & SOCIAL JUSTICE by staci haines. a great read on how trauma is not just an individual problem but a societal problem, and how to integrate trauma work into society at large.
TRAUMA & RECOVERY by judith l. herman. this is a classic in the therapy field and really set the tone for our modern approaches to trauma treatment. the pdf linked is the first edition of the book but it has since been updated as we learn more about complex trauma.
THE BODY NEVER LIES: THE LINGERING EFFECTS OF CRUEL PARENTING by alice miller. what it says on the tin: this book covers the effects of trauma inflicted by parents on the body and the brain.
cheers, and happy reading!
