Sometimes a character is feeling these feelings for the first time and an author wants to tell that. Reciprocation =/= good ending. If not, every character who experiences anger should be expected to kill someone or something by the end of it. If character A gets angry to their pet, for example, would a good ending means needing to kick the fuck out of them? Yeah, well, same shit applies to romance.

Evan always looks out for domestic things, such as clean towels and toothbrushes. If Barty's gets too ruffled (he even asks Bee if he's chewing on them), he just silently buys a new one.

After Evan dies, Barty's staring at his ruined toothbrush and his dirty towel, having no heart to change them because Evan is always the one who does this. Maybe he'll do it this time, too.

Except he wouldn't. And it takes Barty months to realize.
