You must jerk off and cry to absolve all of your sin
and see at the end of the day, richard knew them all for less than a year. it wasn't even an entire year.
presumably the school year at hampden starts in september and ends in june, and it wasn't even over when henry died. richard had 10 months with them, max. and that's not even considering that the school was closed for like two months in the winter, and you have to factor in some buffer space since they weren't even friends right away and there was still some time before finals when henry died. it was truthfully maybe like 8 months. and that may still be an overestimate.
by the time he's 28, it's maybe 2% of his entire life. and he's not even a little bit over it.
and that's not because it was horrible, but because it wasn't.
he was 19 years old just getting out of his abusive dad's house for the first time. he'd spent his entire life trapped and unsafe and powerless, and hampden was his first taste of freedom. the greek class was the first time in his life that he truly felt like he had friends. the first time he truly felt like he had a family. that was his first time being happy!! in his entire life. of course he was going to do everything in his power to hang on to it. and he was so young and impressionable and damaged by things he hadn't even begun to understand.
the story is very obviously a tragedy, but sometimes i wonder if most people understand what it is that makes it a tragedy. it's not that there was never any hope or love or happiness. it's that there were all those things and they were destroyed.
that's why he's not over it. he misses them. he still loves them.
and he was never able to find anything else that made him happy in the same way.
and he tried. that's the thing about richard. he always tried to make his life better. he was trying from the first moment when he broke into his dad's car and stole his tax documents to fill out his financial aid forms. he's trying years later. he's the only one who graduates, he was even getting a phd, he'd clearly found ways to keep himself afloat financially. but he wasn't happy. not at all. because he was so lonely.
and he tried in that regard too. you can tell he tried with sophie because he was willing to move to california just to make her happy. that was his mistake, actually. that he kept sacrificing to make other people happy. i'd bet you my life savings that he never even told her how much he hated california, how much he associated it with his trauma. i doubt he told her about his trauma at all. she never knew what he was thinking because he never opened up to her. she was scared by the way he looked when he first woke up in the morning because she didn't have a clue why he was so haunted.
a lot of it he wouldn't have been able to tell her, but some of it he could have. he could have told her about his childhood abuse, at least. he never tells anyone, except extremely minor things to henry and then only because he kinda had to. he almost never even thinks about it himself. he's barely begun to understand what happened to him much less process it and he still carries around so much guilt and insecurity he almost drowns in it sometimes.
even though he doesn't really understand what he needs to do, though, he does try. he clearly tried with sophie. he tries for his friends too. there's a lot to be said for the fact that both he and camilla drop everything and travel across the country when they find out francis attempted suicide. they hadn't even seen him in years.
and he tries to reconnect with them. he tries to tell francis not to marry someone he doesn't love just for his grandfather's money and to just get a job and take care of himself. francis just won't budge on the topic. he chooses to be miserable out of fear.
and his problem with camilla is he's always so all or nothing. he's either barely capable of forming words around her or he's doing incredibly impulsive things. he should have tried to reconnect with her as a friend, to start with something small instead of abruptly asking her to marry him when he hadn't even seen her in years. he was always overwhelmed by how he felt about her. and in that moment, by how badly he didn't want her to leave.
and he's still dreaming about henry even though he's been dead for 8 years. a man he knew for maybe 8 months.
it's the only story he'll ever be able to tell.
i have shed actual tears about him.
My husband just asked, "What if I gift you a birthday cake with Henry Winter's face on it, then make you chop him with a knife on camera?" (he hates all tsh characters equally and with passion)
Richard’s first description of Cloke by the way:
If we strip down all the pretense, the reason why Richard was accepted into their weird little clique is because he's a pathetic lying piece of broke twink with drug issues.
Predators can sense it.
"He's 10/10 (smart, wealthy, good-looking, strong, problem-solving, rather considerate) but he has anger issues, obsessed with ancient ideas, hermit-like, killed his best friend, an innocent man, and killed himself in front of you. What do you rate him?"
"Does he understand ancient Greek? I'd rate nine. Ten if he wears glasses. Eleven if broad shoulders are shouldering and big hands are handing."
Barty "you've got two black eyes and bruised up thighs, he said, I can fight if you can fight" Crouch Jr.
Evan "fuck you, then you fucked me and ruined everything" Rosier
boyloser barty is just so good because it’s like there’s the academic side, the one that he was praised so highly for in the classroom but outside he’s scummy and a fucking punk in every scenario. he’s actually so uncool that it’s kinda cool but in a really disgusting way where he smokes random people’s cigarette butts because he swears he can get more out of it and yeah maybe it’s landed him with some depraved sickness, but aesthetically he thinks he’s top tier when in reality he’s annoying and gross. he’s best friends with the fifty something year old woman that works second shift at the gas station he works at part time before going into a late night shift at the 24 hour smoke shop in the sketchiest part of town. he doesn’t wash his hair for like a week because it looks cooler that way, but he’s just a crusty little fuck that doesn’t really know how to make a lot of friends even though he’s loud and obnoxious, to a fault even. but he’s purposeful with his obnoxiousness. he understands time and place and allows the snark to pop out at all the right times. he’s a pathetic flirter, it’s so gross. he goes over the top, stupid things, trying to real someone in but it’s cringe and weird and makes everyone around recoil and wince. he collects playing cards and pins the joker to bulletin board and that’s his idea of a good night. that, supplemented with a pack of virginia slim menthols and whipped cream vodka.
this is rosekiller
(scarlett overkill is barty, herb is evan)
theyre canon
evan rosier would never change his last name
something inside of him will always stay rotten and loyal even if he attempts to reject his bloodline
barty rosier has a certain ✨ je ne sais quoi ✨
he sounds like he just emerged from a parisian sewer: hon hon hon, je m'appelle Ba-ty Rosier. oui oui, c'est moi. now, give me your croissant, do not test me, mon ami. i will fight you over zis pastry. 🥐
rosekiller where they do great romantic gestures for each other (the only problem is that they're always unethical, mortally wrong, crazy or simply illegal)
examples:
Barty thinks Evan is so beautiful he belongs in a museum... He painted a rather mediocre portrait of him literally on top of Mona Lisa.
Evan proposes with huge rose-shaped signet ring... He was grave robbing so long till he found some piece of jewellery that would do.
Barty takes Evan on romantic trip abroad... This man is literally wanted there, under an arrest warrant, facing the death penalty.
Evan gives Barty a jar containing a heart, which he has cursed so that it beats in time with his own... To do that he needed a human heart that was still beating till the moment he took it.
Saw these on Pinterest. Sorry not sorry, Francis would wear them both.
Reasons why I love Francis Abernathy
“ ‘Cubitum eamus?’ ‘What?’ ‘Nothing.’ He transferred the cigarette to his left hand and offered the right one to me. It was bony and soft-skinned as a teenage girl’s.”
“Boo,’ he said. We both jumped back. Francis smiled thinly, light glinting off his fraudulent pince-nez. Cigarette smoke curled from his nostrils.”
drives an old convertible Mustang very very carefully
“Good girl,’ said Francis, winding the bandages around the arch of her foot. Like most hypochondriacs, he had an oddly soothing bedside manner. ‘Look at you. You didn’t even cry.’ 'It didn’t hurt that much.’ 'The hell it didn’t,’ Francis said. 'You were really brave.”
“Francis, barefoot and still in his bathrobe, stepped precariously over rocks and branches, balancing his glass of ginger ale. Once we got to the lake he waded in, up to his knees, and beckoned dramatically like Saint John the Baptist”
such a drama queen
“Francis sent me a six-page letter about how bored he felt, and how sick he was, and virtually everything he’d had to eat since I’d seen him last.”
he cooks fancy elaborate meals for his friends
“this man was not Voltaire we killed. But still. It’s a shame. I feel bad about it.”
very good kisser even if NO ONE APPRECIATES IT
tastes like tea and cigarettes
dresses like a victorian age fashion icon
that scene where he sits on a windowsill and drunkenly eats maraschino cherries at 6 am
“Somebody – one of those damned toddlers, I guess – got my favorite scarf off the bed and wrapped up part of a chicken leg in it. That nice silk one with the pattern of clocks on it. It’s just ruined.”
has a bad habit of burning furniture with his forgotten cigarettes
signed his suicide letter with “Cheerily, Francis”
he is absolutely covered in freckles
“asparagus is in season”

Meanwhile what Judy sees:
Heads up, I’m gonna get kinda vulgar for a sec, just be in the room with me. Ik we like to fawn over abercaulay in the abstract sense but, tonight I’m thinking of how unsavory and unromantic their hookups/dynamic would actually be in practice. Do we think Charles ever upchucked mid fuck? Lost his hard on from being so wasted? Do we think he ever pushed Francis facedown so he didn’t have to look him in the eyes and think too hard about the body beneath him being his friend; the little boy, the teen, the young man smiling in framed photos scatted around the country house?
Or inversely, do we think Francis ever looked down and caught his eyes, only to find them empty—that the Charles he knows, who sneezes in the sun and talks to the TV when a game’s on, isn’t there? Not really anyway; the lights are on, but no one’s home. What about after? Even when presented with rarities such as a bed, privacy, and time, I doubt Charles’d stick around if he were lucid enough to leave; or maybe he’d just crash, absolutely spent. Do we think Francis was ever woken up in the middle of the night by Charles stumbling to the bathroom/trashcan to puke? What was he was thinking about, lying alone in the dark, listening to him retch?
not to make it worse but have we also thought of francis being rough with charles when he’s riding him or if they ever switch, because he needs an outlet for his frustration of the situation? insulting charles if he can’t stay hard, acting bored, grabbing charles by the face and digging his nails in just to watch him wince?
and charles, resident catholic, full of guilt, takes it all, thinks every scratch and insult is his punishment for his sin, a reminder that he shouldn’t be enjoying this as much as he is?
and what if i said charles prays after sex if he’s awake long enough, or the next morning? francis waking up, looking over and seeing charles desperately clutching a rosary at the edge of the bed, whispering frantically as if it will absolve him of falling once again into the bed he can’t bring himself to stop sharing with a pretty devil with green eyes and fiery hair like the hell he’ll undoubtedly end up in?
Evan fights with his fists, but Barty fights with his words.
