Cape Fear

So that’s it. The ending.

How did you guys feel about it?

What I really liked about Cape Fear was the setting. That Southern Gothic vibe, the atmosphere, the way the Bowden house was designed. Some of the camerawork was genuinely great and looked really cool.

Javier Bardem played Max with an insane amount of intensity, and Amy Adams was super strong opposite him as Anna.

But none of that saves the writing for me.

The characters were already making stupid decisions throughout the series, but the finale took it to a whole new level.

In the middle of the season, it was mostly the kids having total brain farts just to push the plot forward. By the end, everything felt so forced and constructed that it just wasn’t fun to watch anymore.

If there’s a Season 2, which I really hope there isn’t, even though they definitely left the door open...

I’ll probably still watch it.

Guess I’m a masochist.

I’ve already seen all of them, but I’m rewatching the whole lot with someone who hasn’t seen any of them yet 😄

Really curious to see what they think and whether my own personal ranking changes this time around.

19 Emmy nominations for Widow’s Bay? 👀

Honestly, I’m so happy to see this little mystery series getting the recognition it deserves.

The performances especially stand out to me. Matthew Rhys as Tom Loftis, Kate O’Flynn as Patricia Moyer, Stephen Root as Wyck Crawford, and Dale Dickey as Rosemary all brought something special to the show.

The writing, directing, and creative work behind the scenes being recognized feels incredibly fitting too.

Well deserved. 🖤

Widow’s Bay Tribute

Spoilers for the Season 1 finale.

I genuinely loved Widow’s Bay.

This show somehow gave me everything I wanted without ever feeling like it was trying too hard. The setting, the fog, the island, the weird local history, the town hall chaos, the old secrets, the dry humor, the horror elements, and that slightly unhinged small-town energy. It all worked for me.

Tom, played by Matthew Rhys, and Patricia, played by Kate O’Flynn, stayed with me the most, honestly. Their scenes had such a strong mix of tension, exhaustion, emotion, and those strange little human moments.

Tom especially became one of my favorite lead characters, because he’s not polished or heroic in an obvious way. He’s tired, skeptical, irritated, sometimes deeply frustrating, and somehow still completely compelling. He feels like someone trying very hard to stay rational while the island keeps politely destroying his entire worldview.

Patricia brought so much weight to the story too. Every scene with her felt like there was more going on underneath. Quiet, strange, sad, funny, and haunted in a way that never felt forced. My Final Girl No. 1, honestly.

But really, the whole cast was incredible. Everyone added something to the atmosphere. Even the smaller characters helped make the town feel alive, weird, suspicious, and oddly believable.

If I had one tiny thing to complain about, it would be the open questions. There are a few things I really hope we get answers to in Season 2. But honestly, that’s also part of why I’m so invested now. Annoying how well that works. Very rude of the storytelling.

I’m so ready for Season 2.

Yes, it’s honestly insane what young talent can pull off with very little money, a lot of devotion, and a wildly creative mind.

Sam Raimi, Kane Parsons, Curry Barker… it’s kind of enviable what that mix can create.

And then it’s horror too, my favorite genre 😄

Okay, okay, I admit it. Maybe I’m way too nerdy and seeing things that weren’t even intentional… But the Widow’s Bay finale really gave me LOST vibes 💀

LOL 2.0

This is a pure feel-good movie with a mini coming-of-age story.

So really not my thing.

I also wasn’t the target audience at all. The daughter is around 25 and childfree, and the mother is slowly heading toward retirement age. I couldn’t really identify with any of the characters. So for this review, I’m mostly sticking to the acting, camera work, and overall execution.

And honestly, I don’t have much to criticize there. The film looks solid, it’s well acted, and it has that typically French lightness you either enjoy or you don’t. Sophie Marceau carries the whole thing with confidence, even if the script doesn’t exactly give her the most exciting scenes in the world.

If you like French feel-good movies, and maybe even know the first film, you’ll probably be well served here.

What bothered me, though, was the constant attempt to feel young and modern. Phones, personal settings for the fictional characters, little social media moments, all of it keeps getting emphasized. You can really feel the movie trying to show how current it is. At times, it feels a bit forced.

And then there’s the way the film handles drugs. It feels like people are smoking weed constantly, and hallucinogenic chocolate is treated pretty casually, almost like a hip, normal fun moment. Maybe it’s supposed to feel modern and relaxed, but I found it more irritating than anything. Not shocking, just one of those brief moments where you think, is this really how drugs are being treated in France right now, or is the film just trying very hard to seem loose and current?

For fans of French feel-good comedies, this is probably a nice watch.

For me, there just wasn’t much to take from it. That’s how it goes sometimes with Mystery Reviews.

I really hope Season 2 gives us more on this deeply suspicious little guy.

I love Tom as a character a lot. There are times under stress we see him kind of regress back into asshole mode and I think that’s really strong character writing like it’s not huge. It’s just little moments. But it makes his growth feel all the more dynamic. He’s such an interesting lead pov character because in a typical horror story he’d be the bad guy. He’d be the Amityville mayor trying to open the beach up despite the shark attacks.

Yes, exactly this. Matthew Rhys is so good at making Tom feel messy and human without turning those moments into a big dramatic speech.

And the chemistry with the rest of the cast helps so much too. Everyone plays off each other so well, and it gives the whole show this weird, lived-in energy.
