Byler Was Canonized In Season 4 Episode 2 Because Of Mike’s Words

Byler won the ship war back during Season 4 Episode 2.

I’m just going to walk and you decide if you want to go with me.

The second Mike Wheeler told Will Byers this

the writers confirmed that they would date by the end of the next season.

Doesn’t matter if Mike knew that Will had feelings for him or if he didn’t.

Doesn’t matter that there are 4 episodes left of the series.

It is a Mike-ism to say it twice, but the existence of the line “we’re friends” is enough.

Because the other Stranger Things characters who have said that about their friend did go on to date them.

Does it matter which characters die or break up? No, because the setup was done and it paid off with the other couples. Each couple… but Stancy and Mileven.

Byler won the war.

But if they do not become canon, then the Duffer Brothers backed out of the legitimate romantic buildup they’d done for Byler, the same buildup they used for the other heterosexual and homosexual couples in the show.

From 4x08 really gave me massive Buffy “Normal Again” vibes.

Not saying it’s a direct, confirmed reference, but that whole setup with Henry instantly triggered that specific TV brain memory.

“You’re not actually trapped in this nightmare world. You’re in a hospital. This whole horror show is just a construct in your broken mind.”

Buffy 6x17 did that beautifully and brutally back then, making everyone question what was real.

Seeing From pull that same kind of mind trick on Henry to destabilize him was fantastic.

Different shows, same horrible little reality crisis.

Anyone else catch that parallel, or is it just my 90s/00s TV brain acting up again?

And by the way, I hated that Buffy episode back then.

Not in a “brilliant but painful” way. I just thought it sucked.
