Done With The Compass After Dark: Fancy Dress Costuming

Now that you've all read Chapter 5, @commanderbuffy and I thought we'd start doing a deeper dive into some of the Research we did for this section of the fic; we had a tremendous and some might say unreasonable amount of fun digging into the textiles and aesthetics of this era to add flavour to the fic worldbuilding. Most of this pulls from original primary sources, the Library of Congress had an amazing starting point in original deportment guides, letter-writing guides, and fancy dress costume idea guides from the era and we Got Really Weird from there.

The original text in each moodboard is from a real pair of costuming guides for fancy dress balls written by someone named Ardern Holt; there is a gentlemans' version and a ladies' version, obviously. They include such gems as: Canada (the concept), and The Transatlantic Cable.

Elora's was in many ways the easiest; we didn't have to do a lot of blocking around her outfit and we got to be whimsical.

Jade's costuming was the one we debated the most; we wanted something that felt like a knight but dressing Kit and Jade in menswear didn't feel quite right for the character moment. Joan gives a great compromise, with armor and sword but also a lovely floaty dress to play with.

Kit's was by far the most complicated to pull sources for; it's the only costume from the menswear book and is technically a mishmash of two costumes: Romeo and the Garde Francais. We wanted something that felt old fashioned and royal and gallant, to nod to canon Kit's royal ancestry; the Romeo outfit felt too informal. It also felt important not to be too on-the-nose with Romeo and Juliet but to allow for little touches to foreshadow their compatibility - in this case, the lady-and-gentleman and the royal blue.
