Yuuri sighs, the lilt of his gamer-tag as soothing as it is formidable; a nondescript character at the start, and a late-game adversary in the making. It isn’t always easy, recognizing what GamerLevelEros means to the tens of thousands currently flocked to the World of Warcraft fan-site he and Phichit spent the last six years building. More importantly, it isn’t easy recognizing what it means to him. Time only serves to make it more surreal, which is why Phichit’s indignance isn’t as grave as it is impeccably scripted. Yuuri has a tipping point, and Phichit is the keeper of well-placed nudges.
But tonight...everything feels different. There’s a treasure chest in front of him, and the consequences of opening it could either spell reward or disaster. After all, no one knows who GamerLevelEros is. His alias covers the brunt of his online presence, and Yuuri strives to keep it that way. Forever, if he has to.
“I know you’re nervous.” Phichit says.
“Fucking understatement.”
“Should we do another pros and cons list?”
Yuuri makes a face. “We’ve already done twelve, and the pros always win.”
“They won for the website too, remember?” Phichit, who spent the last hour on his feet, drags a chair next to Yuuri, sinking into it with a smile. “That was a band-aid, Yuuri, and so is this. You just have to rip the fucking thing right off.”
“What if it...doesn’t work?” Yuuri tilts his head back, studies the ceiling as though the secrets to this quest are hiding up there, barely out of his reach. “What if I’m not cut out for this?”
“Then it doesn’t work. And you move on. But until then,” Phichit gestures to Yuuri’s PC, “you at least have to try.”
Yuuri exhales, the apprehension like an incoming preemptive strike. No one created this beast on his behalf. This was entirely his doing, an idea spread over endless pages, handwritten with the intensity of a man who had one drink too many. Sobriety didn’t quelch his excitement either; if anything, his stamina bar went into overdrive and the long-winded rant he fed Phichit was partially immortalized in a draft forum post announcing an addition to GamerLevelEros’ repertoire:
GamerLevelEros, Twitch Streamer.
For all intents and purposes, it makes sense. He’s achieved the level to enter this new territory, is equipped to venture forth and do what he loves most in the world - game. Despite the voice at the back of his mind screeching for him to stop, to retreat, to shrink away...Yuuri knows. He knows that this just might be his place to call home.
Emerging from my hiatus a 2nd time. I just want to say to you, my readers, the incredible unicorns that gush and scream and update me about life in the comments of my fics since I've left the socials...you are the real MVPs! After much thought, I've decided to leave the socials (Tumblr and Twitter) soon. I'll still be writing fic, and updating my WIPs, don't worry! YOI is still a huge part of me, and it'll always be that beacon that kept me breathing back in early 2017.
Tumblr will be an archive, since I've had this account forever and deleting it outright is too nuts to think about.
I want to say a huge thank you to everyone for your support. It's been a wild year+ and getting back to writing after more than a decade has been amazing. You guys have been something else, and I'm truly humbled that I got to know some of you :) For every single kind word you all sent my way, I'm sending it all back 1000000000x!
