okay i know most people know that in those long eyes the lyrics “let’s skip this tide” and “ignore the tide” refer to alice ignoring alfred’s sickness but the use of tides is so satisfying to me. 

tides are so great symbolically because they first and foremostly represent an endless, escapable cycle. the bigger picture of this for alice is that the cycle of life and death is a natural one, like the tide, and will always happen. during those long eyes they’re in flowing tide, folklorically, a symbol of prosperity and life; this scene is essentially the part of the show where the both of them are at their happiness. tides are extreme and whilst flowing tide is when the water is at its highest, due to the forementioned cyclical nature, there must always be a low to follow, the ebbing tide.

folklorically, the ebbing tide is a melancholy symbol of failure, of weakness, and of death. other beliefs similarly state that no creature can die except at ebb tide and persons who die of chronic or acute disease expire at the moment when the tide begins to recede. the idea of the ebbing tide is synchronous to alfred’s death and alice’s lowest moment in the show emotionally. 

the tides were seen dictators of the timings of life and death itself. by having them sing about skipping/ignoring this tide is them trying to skip the lowest points in life, and in this case alfred’s death, in order to keep the happiness they are currently experiencing. however, as the tides show, impermanence will always be a part of life and we cant ignore or skip the parts we don’t want to experience (which is what alice learns by the end of the show).

tabatha was originally played off broadway by nkeki obi-melekwe before she left the show to play tina turner on the west end, and was replaced by kim blanck! (pictured in op’s post) clarissa was played by catherine ricafort, she wears a yellow dress :)

She’s not used to the quiet. After all those years, living with others and picking out their voices—their inflections, the lives their languages betrayed—the sound of teacups clink, clink, clinking—the sirens overhead—the silence is unkind, is all. Alfred had always known of this simmering sadness, this residual grief—not hers, really, just inherited. “Come here,” he would say—c'mere—dragging her to his warmth and then that complicated tangle of hands, touching like they’d found they were now allowed to. Like the very act could shoo the sadness away. If he were here, he would sway her to humming under their breaths, a melody she can now barely recall, so sweet as to be from a dream. If he were here, perhaps she could stand her own mind.
