I’m sure y'all probably already know both of these, but in case anyone doesn’t here are two quick and easy solutions to eliminate saran-wrapped clothes in The Sims 3.
First, there is a glitch whenever a sim is placed directly from the bin into the world where the game miscalculates the specular (shine) on their clothing. It doesn’t happen every time or with every sim, but often enough that it was irritating me. Restarting the game and/or reloading that particular save might fix this issue too (although I’m not 100% certain about that), but a simpler way to solve the problem is to take the offending sim into stylist mode with MasterController (or edit in CAS or use a mirror or a dresser) and change something about them. Anything will work, but you need to alter their appearance somehow so the game will know to recalculate the textures on their outfits. I typically just move their eyelash slider over by half a centimeter, but changing the opacity on their makeup slightly or giving them a new accessory or a different pair of shoes would work too. When you exit back to live mode, their clothes should appear a lot less shiny.
The second fix involves removing the specular texture from within the game using velocitygrass’s Remove Deco mod. Once you’ve installed the mod, go into stylist mode or CAS, open the CASt tool on whatever item of clothing you want less shine on, pull up the cheat console (ctrl+shift+C), and type “deco p” without the quotes. This will completely replace the specular on whichever item you are CASting with a solid black texture, essentially eliminating the extra shininess. It doesn’t work on hairs as far as I know, but it will take care of plastic looking shoes, accessories, and clothing.
If anyone has any problems or questions, please let me know! Or if you have any other solutions for that first glitch, I’d be more than happy to hear it! =D Thank you!
ETA: It’s a very subtle difference in my pictures, but if you click to enlarge you should be able to see it. Or maybe I’m the only one who’s bothered by it, lol! XD
