This tumblr is pretty much defunct now but I got an email the other day saying it was my sixth birthday on Tumblr (time flies) so I figured I’d have a quick scroll through my dashboard and post. I’m about to move back home after living in with friends Sheffield for four years, feeling a bit weird about moving back to Blackburn but it is to save money (which is exactly what I have not done the past four years) and go on to hopefully more exciting things a year or so down the line.

Ok I was gonna let this sit in my queue and wait but I’m way too nerdy about this map. Vignelli’s subway maps are a landmark in design because they mark a shift between maps dedicated to portraying land as it lays and maps dedicated to marking land as humans use it. In a lot of ways this is a perfect example of modernism as a rejection of tradition in embrace of the practical. Any time you see a transit map that uses more or less straight lines instead of literal portrayals of the city routes, it’s because of Vignelli.
