A self-portrait of Frida in paper. I'm excited that the magazine is out in the world. In 2008 I traveled to Mexico and saw Diego's murals and La Casa Azul where Frida lived firsthand. Both experiences left such a strong impression on me artistically. Did you know that the iconic Rainbow Flag, the symbol of LGBQT rights and the Pride movement was designed by a man called Gilbert Baker in San Francisco in 1978? Baker (helped by a group of activist friends) had met gay rights leader Harvey Milk a few years earlier and had been active in the gay rights movement happening in San Francisco at that time. Baker was inspired to come up with a symbol of pride and celebration for the gay community. This illustration depicts Baker and his friends joining pieces of the coloured fabric together on his sewing machine at home (which is what they did for the first flag). The spread was one of two I made for a children's book that I ultimately wasn't successful in getting. I still feel happy I had the opportunity to learn about and depict this incredible man. Baker died in 2017 but not before he had seen gay marriage legalised in America and around the world and the Rainbow Flag embraced worldwide as a powerful symbol of equality, resistance and PRIDE. #gilbertbaker #rainbowflag #gaypride #lgbqt #sanfranciscogaypride #gayrightsmovement #harveymilk #illustration #illustrationforchildren #collage

Sometimes an illustration brief comes along and you feel very, very lucky.. I was asked to illustrate 17 spot illustrations for the @bravery_mag Frida Kahlo issue. I'm sharing a sneak peek here and I'll be able to share more of the illustrations I created once the issue launches in May. Bravery Magazine is a quarterly print publication run by two incredible women, Ashley and Elyse, who are based in San Francisco. Each issue uses illustration, stories and activities to teach children about a brave woman who forged her own path with courage, conviction and strength. The issue coming up is all about Frida Kahlo's life, the challenges she faced and the life and art she ultimately created. @bravery_mag is currently stocked in America and available to purchase and subscribe to online. Issue number three of @bravery_mag featuring Frida Kahlo is out tomorrow. I created a number of spot illustrations to accompany stories about milestones in Frida's life, from childhood through to adulthood. As a teenager Frida suffered horrific injuries in a bus accident. She was confined to a bed for months and months and wore a full body cast for recovery. Frustrated by her confinement she decided she would take up painting, using her father's leftover paint supplies. Her parents fashioned her an easel that she could use from bed and she had a mirror hung above so she could paint self-portraits as a way of expressing her emotional and physical pain. Like that, Frida's career as an artist, activist and trailblazer began. What an incredible woman. #fridakahlo #mexicanartist #womanartist #braverymag #womanpainter #frida
