so i didnt know there was this buzz online about LVs new sneakers, with people saying pharrell copied vans, and even vans nodding to being copied. i saw him posting it and went like, oh, hes doing those sail boat shoes, very middle aged dad of him, why not. i even forgot vans existed LMAO maybe it's the leather, i dont know. but ofc dumb loud mouths would connect them to vans bc _granted_ not everyone has seen those beachy/1930s tennis shoes (which apparently are called CVOs, til) _in context or fashion history illustrations_. but ofc tyler had to chime in, and i love his fashion rants.

the more i think about "shutup and dribble", "it's not that deep", about how there's so little remote work for designers bc bosses want to keep an eye on you 24/7, and how artists are supposed to be in competition with each other to have a place in the sun bc nobody is willing to pay for you to paint when we need people to cure cancer, the more im convinced society wants artists to just give up bc it's tough out there (you know, to shut up, get a real job and paint your little drawings on the side). but it's tough out there for everyone. specially for people who cure cancer. you think they dont listen to music when theyre doing research? yeah. so let's not. pls. people in the humanities are always keeping people in stem alive but we dont remind them of that. so maybe we should? idk im kind of pissed lmao what would brazil be without the athletes who bring them joy? (as much as i hate football&their fans, i _get_ it). believe me, the only reason there arent more armed conflicts is bc art is a better purpose than killing each other. making a song about killing someone bc theyve been wronged is a much better way of dealing with being hurt than actually killing someone. art is doing _wonders_ for society. but you know, "shut up and dribble". but if we go any further, oh no, people are gonna get too woke and change things, so no we cant give 0 money to the arts, it's gotta be 5. but still, 10 for the military. and i remember being like oh, if war comes, whos gonna fight, the softies with the paint brushes? bc nobody thinks about the possibility of everyone being busy with paint brushes and not give a fuck about war.

do we really need wars over oil when we use more public transportation? tyler, could you please make buses look cool bc you already made bikes look cool but LMAO ANYWAY thats why im thankful for japanese games not being so car-focused bc public transport *is cool as fuck* and people say oh, run away from toxic relationships. but the saddest reality is that a lot of the core of being an artist is having empathy for people who give zero shits about you (aka artists loving humanity as a whole but humanity giving zero shits about artists). tyler has been banned from entering the UK for somewhere between 3 to 5 years per a letter from the secretary of state for the home department of the united kingdom. the letter specifically cites lyrics he wrote 6-7 years ago for his albums bastard and goblin – the type of lyrics he hasn’t written since… highlights from the letter include that his work “encourages violence and intolerance of homosexuality” and “fosters hatred with views thats seek to provoke others to terrorist acts..” i grew up on NWA, eminem and rage against the machine, so its hard to me to fully wrap my head this thought process and its implications. 

to say that i am confused would be an understatement. can you imagine being beholden to things you said when you were 18? tyler has been to the UK over 20x in the last 5 years without incident (shows, in stores, meet and greets). we rented out a movie theatre last month in London for a private showing of napoleon dynamite for his fans. literally last month.

more importantly, this is a broader issue of free speech, with new lines being drawn that include reaching back in time without acknowledging growth. in fact, punishing growth. what i do know is tyler is part of an argument that is counter to who he has become. how do you punish someone for growing up? since the letter acknowledged he was writing from an alter ego perspective does this then apply to book writers? the fact that he has evolved into someone who has acknowledged and grown out of that is simply lost in the narrative. is he not worthy of the pat on the back for becoming aware and making changes? what message does that send? is race a conscious or subconscious factor at all?

theres a lot to absorb and understand, but while he gets painted as some sort of anti christ i want to make sure people know the facts, which are that he hasn’t delved into those lyrics in years – he writes songs about cars and spreading your wings. he doesn’t drink or smoke, he owns his own businesses, he takes care of his family and friends, he’s honest, grateful, aware, fearless, intelligent, and inspiring. his shows serve as a release, not acts of aggression.

is he perfect? absolutely not. he’s a human evolving like the rest of us, and evolution is a process, not a light switch.

im not defending his OLD lyrics. to be honest they make me cringe, but i stand beside him because of who he actually IS. our 8 year old daughter, who is constantly inspired by him, said it best;  "why would they ban tyler? that makes no sense.“
