My time has come ! PMD rom hack ramble !
From the games I played (and finished), I recommend :
Pokemon Strung up by Sketches is no hesitation my fav rom out there. Exceptional gameplay, it feels like re-discovering the games mechanics. On the technical plan, I just didn't knew you could do those things with rom hacking. Unique visuals as well, custom music simples but fitting. Onto the story, and even more the ambiance, it's just so well written, creepy but not gore (Warning ! Psychological horror !). But at this point, it's almost not a PMD game anymore, as it deviate so much from the original game…
Explorers of the spirit, wich is basically a new game+ of explorers of sky. You rediscover the story from a new angle. It's really long (almost as long as the base game I think) and the story is well written, both faithful to the original while being compelling. It really expend the already existing universe.
There's pokemon bright future, wich feature a lot of pokemons from more recent generations. The story is really sweet. It takes the classic formula but twists it in really interesting ways. It even has custom music !
Last there's pokemon Seven symphonies. I finished chapter one and am currently playing chapter 2. Chapters 3 and 4 are not finished yet. It takes place after the story of explorers of sky, and feature an interesting story with choices... I don't really see where all of this is going yet, but well see ! Also really addictive to play (short dungeon, a bit of story, repeat), but sometime frustrating (Hard dungeons. It's not uncommon to do 4 or even 5 time the same dungeon, because one mistake and you're dead)(And sometime you do one first try no problem).
Special episode 0, by the same rom hacker that made seven symphonies (I recommend playing at least the start spe0 before playing s7). It's the story of grovyle and dusknoir in the frozen future (and even after ?). Really interesting story, I should finish it.
And not played but planning to :
Let the music play, wich seems to have a really emotional story and good custom music.
There's the pokemon fragments (chapter 1 and 3) who seems to feature interesting enigmas using dungeons mechanic, by one of the persons who made Strung up by sketches. Haven't played it yet, and the author deleted it so...
Pokemon abriged, the same game has the original explorers of sly but made stupidly funny.
There's also two roms named Explorers of the unknown and Eternal Elemental in my rom folder. I don't remember why I downloaded those two, guess they looked interesting ?
Anyway. I hope this help ! I'm planning to finish as much rom hacks this summer as I can, so I can maybe do detailed review.
