I donât really get the point of people mad at mitski for having a CIA dad other than the fact that she grew up with some wealth that maybe allowed her more freedom to pursue a music career which is how you can describe most people in the entertainment industry now bc thereâs such a huge wealth disparity that only the rich have the economic freedom to try and âmake itâ. She just fits into the larger problem but on an individual level she didnât do anything wrong and thereâs a lot we donât know about her relationship with her father, whether she approves of him or even has a relationship with him or what their financial relationship has been. It feels invasive to go digging for this information if she never put on a narrative that would contradict it. Sheâs never been an artist who put her life out for consumption to be picked apart. Isnât that different from someone like King Princess who appropriates poor, queer aesthetics when she grew up an heiress with parents literally in the music industry or Zoe Kazan who tries to play herself off as âmiddle classâ when her grandfather was one of the most successful directors of the 20th century and she refuseses to engage with any criticism of him while reaping all the benefits of being a Kazan in Hollywood. Feels like people are hiding behind political posturing to have a reason to dislike mitski now. This conversation is so limiting.
