"wymack sold his gun when I broke into his apartment"-andrew...
Shout out to wymack who would rather face an intruder bare handed than shoot one of his foxes....
has this scene and specifically this line bounced around in anyone elses head since reading it for the first time. or is it just me
He was not my partner. It was not his job to protect me, and I didn’t want him to. I just wanted him to die.
my absolute favourite part of the golden raven is when jeremy says "good thing neil was here when grayson died, he gave jean a good alibi!" and kevin and andrew look at each other like "he fucking killed that guy" and that's actually canon. that happened
tin anniversary
imagine Neil and Kevin got to meet a full day earlier than expected, plus there were a couple of other gang/Yakuza kids around. one of the kids insists on playing wedding, and Kevin goes along with it to show he's such a good host (Riko is off shadowing with the other eldest children). since Neil is the cutest boy, everyone decides that he should play the husband. this is highly insulting to Kevin, who intrinsically believes that he has the highest social capital. he doesn't even want to play wedding, but he knows damn well that everyone should want him to play the husband
naturally, the compromise is that Kevin can play Neil's bride. Kevin is ready to throw a god damn fit about this, but Neil's pacifying/manipulative instincts are already honed at this age, so he just casually remarks that brides in movies always get what they want and are the most important part of the wedding. this does, indeed, mollify Kevin. the wedding is allowed to continue. Kevin magnanimously gives Neil a kiss on the cheek and that's the end of that
fast forward ten years, and the Foxes are drunk in a rented cabin celebrating the end of the year. Neil, who isn't used to being so relaxed, is reminiscing on old time and spots Kevin's proud tattoo
"of course my ex-wife would get a queen tattoo"
for a second, the rest of the Foxes kind of freeze in confusion, wondering if Neil is potentially suffering from some sort of concussion that they didn't clock earlier, or if he's phenomenally stupid when tipsy. until Kevin snorts and fires back with—
"technically speaking, we never got divorced"
now everyone is screaming, Nicky is having a panic attack about the thought of his friends having been involved in an arranged marriage, Andrew is kind of intrigued by the mystique of discovering he's a mistress, Allison and Matt immediately want to start planning an after-the-fact bachelor/bachelorette party, Dan is drunk dialing Wymack to inform him that he has a son-in-law
at one point, Neil even giggles
happy pride month to Kevin Day. to Kevin “it’s better if he remains heterosexual” Day. to The Queen himself. my poor bisexual repressed baby bird. you deserve sunshine kid.
happy pride month to Andrew Minyard. to those years or trying to cope with having urges he thought were too similar to those of the men who hurt him. to the confusion of hating men andtheir lust but also craving to taste them.
happy pride month to Neil Josten. simultaneously to the kid kept away from intimacy by a father that made it impossible to trust and a mother that encouraged his isolation; and to the demisexual that kept being pushed to express an interest in sex.
happy pride month to Nicky Hemmick. to the teenage boy that was told being himself was a sin, and changing to fit in was the price he had to pay to be loved.
happy pride month to my gay little foxes
kevin, allergic to latex and looking at andrew with the roundest eyes ever: i guess we have to hit it raw.

what I'm saying is that Wymack accidentally became the Carlisle Cullen of collegiate Exy
Neil: I can’t trust anyone. There is no such thing as good people. I have to be alone and turn away from any possible human connection in order to survive.
Matt, strolling in with the power of friendship and Arthurian levels of homoerotic devotion:
I don’t know if this is anything, but Matt is to Neil what Lancelot is to Merlin
Andrew: no girlfriends
Aaron: okay
Andrew, gay:
I like to think Neil is a terrible kleptomaniac. not in the sense that he needs to steal because it’s exciting, or because he can’t settle down without doing it. It’s something much quieter than that, something buried so deeply in his instincts that he doesn’t even notice he’s doing it anymore. It’s the subconscious need to bring anything remotely useful back to what his mind now recognizes as home. a handful of paper clips? they might come in handy someday. a bouncy ball? maybe he’ll get bored. or maybe it’ll be useful as a distraction if he ever needs to throw something and draw people’s attention elsewhere. It doesn’t really matter what it is. anything could become useful eventually. better to take it first and figure out why later. now that Neil finally lives somewhere safe, somewhere he no longer has to abandon overnight, the habit hasn’t disappeared. It simply lingers on autopilot. more than once, while emptying Neil’s pockets before throwing his jeans into the wash, Andrew finds a collection of completely random things that are very obviously not his. worn pens, someone else’s keychain, a roll of tape from the locker room. half the items look as though they’ve already lived full lives in someone else’s hands before mysteriously ending up in Neil’s pockets. Andrew quietly lines them all up on the table and waits. Neil stares at the pile for a long moment before looking back at him. “I… don’t remember taking those.” and he means it. the act has become so instinctive that his hands simply pocket things without consulting the rest of him. somewhere along the way, his brain already filed them away as his possessions the moment he picked them up, so by the time Andrew asks about them, Neil can’t even remember where they came from, only that, at the time, taking them had felt as natural as breathing.
There should be a PJO x AFTG crossover fic where Percy couldn't get into New Roman university or any other university because of all the weird shit in his personal files (like being accused of being a terrorist once, you know) but he started playing exy in high school and a certain coach who will give you a chance when everyone else thinks you're hopeless reaches out to him
Neil to Jean after reconnecting with his mafia uncle:
Obsessed with how Nora wrote Neil a beautiful love story where his demisexuality is something that his partner loves about him and which brings both of them joy.
Neil being demisexual is literally perfect for Andrew. When they first meet, Neil "not swinging" gives Andrew assurance that Neil won't be sexually interested, which allows Andrew to feel safe enough to eventually become close to Neil. I think that Andrew's fear of being the object of sexual attention is partly why he exclusively spends time with people who won't develop sexual desire towards him (the monsters: his relatives + a straight dude; and Renee, from whom he extracts the reassurance that "I don't kiss heathens").
Then, once Andrew gets close to Neil and starts developing feelings for him, Andrew ALSO gets the reassurance that Neil actually does swing. For him, specifically. And Neil's swinging is nothing to do with the physical features of Andrew's body or with Andrew being available and willing. Instead, Neil values and loves the parts of him that Andrew himself has already offered Neil. This couldn't be more perfect for Andrew! Neil is a pipedream. A man for whom loving and respecting Andrew as a person is a precondition for even wanting to touch; a man who won't ever push Andrew to cross a boundary, because his own desires are completely enmeshed with his love for Andrew. Andrew has won the lottery of life.
And for Neil, too, his demisexuality is overwhelmingly a positive thing. It means that Neil doesn't have his head turned when it would have been dangerous for him. Instead he falls for a man who makes him feel safe and cared for. In fact, Neil himself acknowledges this when he first decides to kiss Andrew, reasoning that "the idea of Andrew was so intertwined with the idea of Neil's safety that this too was a means of self-preservation". Also, once Neil recognises what he feels for Andrew, he never has reason to doubt it. Neil doesn't get casual crushes, so he knows that what he feels is The Real Deal.
Anyway, this is beautiful to me. Just the fact that aftg has a demisexual protagonist who finds love is amazing, but then that Nora also gives him someone who doesn't treat Neil's demisexuality as a burden or an obstacle or something to tolerate... that she writes his demisexuality as foundational for the main romance of the books, as fantastic for both Neil and for the man that he loves... infinite applause.
