Rep Fest: I feel like in the Classic Rock/Music fandom a lot of people are really preoccupied with the British Invasion artists and other white artists (ie: Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly etc, etc.) They don’t seem to know about some of the black artists that were making just as big of a splash in America at that time. So, I thought this was a good time to showcase some of the awesome black men and women who were making great music at that time.

Just another post about the amazing Stevie Wonder, following James' post (that you can find here) - because I love "Innervisions" and to me, that is Stevie's masterpiece.
My favourite thing about this album is that just a few days after its release, Wonder had a brutal car crash in North Carolina, while in a car driven by a friend. They were travelling behind a truck carrying logs, and when the two vehicles collided, the logs came flying towards the car, smashing the wind shield and straight into Wonder's head. He was in a coma for days for severe brain contusion, until his friend Ira Tucker first elicited a response from him:
"I remember when I got to the hospital in Winston-Salem. Man, I couldn't even recognize him. His head was swollen up about five times normal size. And nobody could get through to him. I knew that he likes to listen to music really loud and I thought maybe if I shouted in his ear it might reach him. The doctor told me to go ahead and try, it couldn't hurt him. The first time I didn't get any response, but the next day I went back and I got right down in his ear and sang Higher Ground. His hand was resting on my arm and after a while his fingers started going in time with the song. I said yeah, yeah!! This dude is going to make it!" —Ira Tucker

First Single from Thee Oh Sees Forthcoming LP ‘Drop’ which comes out on Record Store Day (19th of April).
It sounds pretty great and it’s great news they have a new album coming out, really got into them recently and their album from last year, ‘Floating Coffin’, is really good.
Worth a listen.

Album of the Day: Stevie Wonder - Talking Book (1972)
Top Tracks: 'You Are the Sunshine of My Life', 'You've Got it Bad Girl', 'Superstition' & 'I Believe (When I fall In Love It Will be Forever)
RIYL: STEVIE WONDER, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Motown, Funk & Soul
The man needs no introduction as it's bloody Stevie Wonder, and this is probably his finest album and has it his biggest body shaking, foot stomper in 'Superstition' a song probably everyone in the world knows. But among the upbeats tunes he sings of heartbreak and loss, empowerment and the ills of society in general. Even though everybody knows Stevie Wonder tunes, everyone should give him an in-depth listen and this is the best place to start in his huge discography.

"Sub Pop 200 is a compilation released in the early days of the Seattle grunge scene (December 1988). It features songs (many of them first releases and otherwise unattainable) from Tad, The Fluid, Nirvana, Steven "Jesse" Bernstein, Mudhoney, The Walkabouts, Terry Lee Hale, Soundgarden, Green River, Fastbacks, Blood Circus, Swallow, Chemistry Set, Girl Trouble, The Nights and Days, Cat Butt, Beat Happening, Screaming Trees, Steve Fisk, and The Thrown Ups.
Many of these bands went on to be incredibly influential in the early 1990s and onwards. Most notable of these were Nirvana, Soundgarden, Green River (who spawned Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone and later Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam), Screaming Trees, and Mudhoney.
The cover is an illustration by comics artist Charles Burns, who was regularly used by Sub Pop for covers and posters around this period."

This all-girl fantasy I’ve had my whole life, of you know…I’m going to show those Beatles, we’re going to be huge! Well, it’s not going to happen, right now, for my generation, for me. You know what I mean? Like, there are fucking riot grrrls sitting there banging on pots and pans and talking about their vaginas, and that’s all really lovely, and like the writing is great, but the music blows. I mean you have to fucking sit in your room and practice. You have to fucking learn how to play guitar, you have to learn how to play bass, you have to learn how to fucking play drums. You have to go get Zeppelin one through four, and you have to fucking sit in a fucking little room off Hollywood Blvd. for two hundred dollars a fucking month, and you have to play those goddamn drums. And for whatever reason, women just haven’t seemed to want to do that.

Kurt Cobain signing a Black Flag record.
Happy Birthday, Kurt! He would’ve been 47 years old today.
Album of the Day: Minutemen – 3-Way Tie (For Last) (1985)
Top Tracks: ‘Prince of Paradise’, ‘Have You Ever Seen the Rain?’, ‘No One’, ‘Ack, Ack, Ack’
Released on legendary punk label SST and after most known album, ‘Double Nickles on the Dime’ (which is fantastic) came this little less know album. It’s actually my favourite Minutemen release and one I listen to the most. It has a number of covers, from bands like Meat Puppets, Blue Oyster Cult and Creedence Clearwater Revival which are done in their funk-punk-jazz style. Mike Watt was coming into his own here as a songwriter and bass player which makes the death of D Boon a worse tradegy. To be honest, all the minutemen albums are great, but this is the perfect starting place as it’s not as daunting as DNotD.

Song of the Day: Hawkwind - The Master of the Universe
Another classic from way back when, this time from legendary space rockers Hawkwind. Playing space rock, basically a great hybrid of 70s hard rock and free form psychedelic jamming, they released some great albums in the 70s and a certain Lemmy from Motorhead used to be a former member (when they released their most famous tune 'Silver Machine').

Exactly 51 years ago, The Kinks were at number 1 on the UK singles chart with 'Tired Of Waiting For You', their second UK number 1.
The first one was 'You Really Got Me'.
I'm always amazed that 'Lola' and 'All Day and All of the Night' were not number 1 singles!
I really like the Kinks and think they still sound very cool, 50 years later!
