Anyways in the yr fandom there’s atleast to me a lack of fics that depict/focus on sara as an autistic person and to me that’s kinda sad cuz Sara’s my favorite character…
Anyways do you know of/have you/can you write any fics like this lol???
Unfortunately, numbers-wise, Young Royals fandom does Sara dirty.
Not as dirty as they used to—I think there’s more understanding of her character arc now, and people are calling for her downfall a lot less than they did in the gap between seasons 2 and 3. I appreciate that people give her a little more grace than before. On the other hand, people still don’t center a lot of fics on her experiences, which makes me sad. Fandoms on average tend to statistically write about men more than women, and YR fandom is in line with fandom averages in that sense.
Sara was the first character I started writing fic about for this fandom, and while I’ve branched out to a number of other characters, she still remains one of my favorite POVs. I was actually in the process of getting my own autism and ADHD diagnosis when I started watching YR, so Sara is special to me because it felt like she was on my journey with me.
Here’s a list of my own writings about Sara:
Terrain Boundaries Territory: A revenge story written in verse and in second person, poured out about two weeks after I finished watching the show for the first time. It was also the first time I’d written a fanfic in over ten years. I went into an excited fugue state trying to figure out what shape Sara and August’s relationship would take in a future season and if she’d be doing a whole revenge scheme on him. For that reason, there’s some Early Installment Weirdness and I never really figured out how to use side characters. But I ended up exploring Sara’s neurodivergence a lot and had so much fn.
Heart and Homeland: My WIP with @heliza24, which is an ensemble piece set in an early 1800s AU. Obviously all the characters get page time in this story, but I’m the writer for Sara’s storyline, and I do think I put quite a lot of effort into it. Because we were working from classical literature, Sara’s storyline echoes Jane Eyre a bit, with some elements of Lydia Bennet sprinkled in. And of course I worked on ways of showing her neurodivergence even if she wouldn’t have the language we have now. Read it for Sara in pretty regency dresses, and for Sara going through a lot of dramatic twists and turns.
While it isn’t Sara-centered, I think Sara’s role in Five Times Felice Ehrencrona Was A Bad Friend is a good one! Her appearances in Sand and the Scale are also to my liking.
Grace Wears White features Sara running into Fröken Ramirez, post-canon, at a clothing swap. Chrysalis Envy is another vignette focused on small Sara within her family dynamic.
Finally, Sara shares half the POV of Alone to Two, which is a canon divergence focused on the idea that Sara and August meet two years earlier, during August’s first year, when Sara sneaks onto Hillerska’s campus out of curiosity. It was fun to reverse-engineer both of them into younger versions of themselves, more frightened and insecure, who might have half a chance of actually having things work out. I have more fics I’d like to write in that universe, maybe. (In the meantime you can read The Realm of Words, a sequel/remix written for me by @kingwille.)

My fatal flaw unfortunately is that I’m a big Sara/August shipper—I love their tragic ending in canon and would not change it for the world, but I do want to see more of them interacting in fics because, well, one wants more of one’s favorite things and I think there’s a lot of threads of characterization one can still play with. So my fics drift into writing Sara and August a lot and will probably be disappointing to someone who wants less of that. I do have some fics that go other places, but something about them seems to go well with themes I want to explore and things I do well as a writer.
