Original Transformers: The Movie Poster (1986)
Today, August 8th, 2016, is the 30th anniversary of the release of Transformers: The Movie. People who respect the series consider this the one and only Transformers movie, disregarding the horrible live action “Transformers” films by Michael Bay.
Something unusual about its release date is that it is a Wednesday, and not a Friday. This unusual release day prevented many theaters from carrying the movie, and it was not successful at the box office. However, it has a cult following which grows with each new generation of fans.
The movie sported an all-star cast, including:
Orson Welles (his final film)
In addition were some big names among the series’ regular voice talent: Susan Blu, Casey Kasem, and Scatman Corothers.
The story takes place in 2005, twenty years after the events in season 2. Season 3 resumed after the events in the movie,
The soundtrack was composed by Vince DiCola, noted for the soundtrack to Rocky IV. Also featured were Stan Bush’s now famous anthem “(You’ve Got) The Touch, not to be confused with the song with the exact same title, parentheses and all, by country-western contemporaries Alabama. Several underground hair metal bands, who invaded the second half of the decade, were also showcased. And of course, it was all spiced up with “Weird Al” Yankovic’s Dare to Be Stupid. It helps that “Weird Al” was on CBS’ Scotti Bros. record label in the 1980s, the same company that released the soundtrack.
The movie saw the death of Optimus Prime and several other season 1 Autobots: Brawn, Prowl, Ratchet, Ironhide, Wheeljack, Windcharger, and Huffer (implied), and also Decepticon Starscream. Other Decepticons cheated death: Megatron, Skywarp, Thundercracker and various Insecticon clones became Galvatron, Cyclonus, Scourge, and his huntsmen, The Sweeps. Many third-wave characters were introduced, other than the new Decepticons: Hot Rod, Kup, Blurr, Springer, Arcee, Ultra Magnus, Wheelie, Wreck-Gar and his tribe of Junkions, various Sharkticons and assorted natives of planet Quintessa, Citizens of Lithone, including Arblus and Kranix, and the monster planet Unicron. We also saw a new cassette for Soundwave: Ratbat, and Blaster gets some as well: Rewind, Eject, Ramhorn and Steeljaw. Let’s not forget that Hot Rod realizes his full potential as Rodimus Prime! And yet an awesome story complete with the giant robots, ship-to-ship combat, and heroic acts was also squeezed in!
Happy 30th anniversary, Transformers: The Movie.
