Postcrypt Coffeehouse

Columbia University 1160 Amsterdam Ave New York, New York 10027

       Postcrypt Coffeehouse is an acoustic, student run, non-profit venue in the basement of St. Paul's Chapel at Columbia University in NYC. It is open to the public; you don’t need to be a student or signed in to enter. Guests range from age 10 to 80.

Performances are every Friday and Saturday night throughout the academic year from 8:30 (doors at 8:00) to 11:30 pm. All shows are free, with a tip jar to help support the coffeehouse.

Open Stage (not open mike because there are no microphones!) is held approximately once a month, usually on the first Saturday. The stage is open for musicians, comedians, storytellers, poets, or anything else you can think of. Performers are generally limited to two songs or 10 minutes, with 15-18 slots.

Please note that due to fire code regulations, Postcrypt is restricted to a total capacity of 30 people.

Postcrypt does not currently serve alcohol, but only because the university revoked their license. They would like to serve alcohol again in the future. As of now, Postcrypt’s only policy about alcohol is that of the university.

Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center

Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center is a volunteer-run non-profit performance space that doubles as a gallery.

Traveling performers are offered home-cooked meals, a higher percentage of cash made at the door, and a place to crash to the night.

There is no elevated stage and the intimate setting is ideal for experimental music, theater, and poetry. Acts are selectively chosen that are strictly non-commercial that support the standards of the community or the mission of LNAC.

All shows are smoke and alcohol free, all ages, and violent or reckless behavior and discriminatory messages or behavior is prohibited.

I don’t know if it is wheelchair accessible or if you have to be sober to attend.

The Aquadome

The Aquadome is a volunteer-operated, non-profit community venue in a small college town, open from late August to early December and from late January to early May to ensure the greatest amount of activity.

Shows are mostly music, but all types of events are encouraged. Events are primarily on weekends with free bi-weekly open mic nights. 

Alcohol is decided on an event-by-event basis.

The Seed

The Seed is a worker owned collective/vegetarian/vegan cafe and community space located in downtown Lancaster.

They're always looking for artists, speakers, and performers who are entertaining, educational, and radically inclined.

The cafe itself doesn't serve alcohol but whether or not alcohol is byob at shows is generally up to promoters. You can probably work something out for whatever is necessary.

Shows usually start around 8:00 or 9:00 and (usually?) are free.

Zootown Arts Community Center

The Zootown Arts Community Center is a nonprofit arts community center that hosts a wide range of events including shows in its 5,000 square foot basement called the ZACC Below.

Shows must end by 11:00 pm and may begin no earlier than 8:00 pm unless special arrangements are made. Doors may open at 7:00 pm.

No drugs or alcohol are allowed on premises, but you do not have to be sober to attend. However, if you are being belligerent, you will be asked to leave.

The community center itself is wheelchair accessible, however the ZACC Below is not.

Possum House

Salem, Oregon

The Possum House is an all ages (kid friendly!), family home in Oregon that hosts shows from time to time.

They're open to shows of all volumes and genres, but due to high demand, they have to be pretty selective in their booking. Bands are responsible for promotion.

The venue is strictly drug and alcohol free but you don’t have to be sober to be there. However, if you are obviously drunk and causing a disturbance, you will be asked to leave.

The Goomba Ranch

The Goomba Ranch is a family run music space operated out of the backyard of their home.

Pets are welcome!

Alcohol is decided upon based on a case by case policy. Underage drinking is prohibited and party atmospheres are discouraged as much as possible. The people running the show are always sober and excessive drinking is happening they try to intervene. If a performer or band were to request that the show be dry or sober they would be more than happy to accommodate.

Flint Local 432

The Local is a non-profit, substance free music venue and community space located in historic downtown that has been running since 1985.

The Local was founded to provide a venue for local bands to play, while promoting an inclusive all-ages environment, and that remains their primary focus. They accommodate national, regional, and state bands when possible, along with hosting a variety of arts and cultural events that are usually less noisy but no less vital.

The venue is strictly drug and alcohol free but you don't have to be sober to be there. However, if you are obviously drunk and causing a disturbance, you will be asked to leave.

The Icehouse

Albany, New York

The Icehouse is a large house in a small municipality that hosts shows from time to time. If they're unable to host a show, they'll listen to your material and send you to other venues or promotors that might be able to help.

The house is home to two dogs, Pinkerton and Boomer.

You don't have to be sober but if you are being harmful or belligerent you will be asked to leave. No drugs or alcohol are allowed on premises.

1919 Hemphill

Fort Worth, Texas

1919 Hemphill is a volunteer run non profit collective in a warehouse space that has been open for over 10 years.

The warehouse features a lending library and a 'free store' on the first floor. They also screen a documentary film series and provide a meeting space for community organizations.

Their slogan is "no booze, no drugs, no jerks" but you don't have to be sober to be there. The volunteers running the space are always sober with the occasional exception.

People are welcome to bring animals as long as their caretaker ensures that they are safe. Animals are not permitted in the performance space when bands are playing.

The first floor is mostly wheelchair accessible, but the performance space is on the second floor.

The Black Sheep Cafe

While the Black Sheep was founded on strong punk, hardcore, and metal roots, the venue has featured  jazz, ska, rap, metal, rock, noise, indie, pop genres (plus more!).

The ELB is a non profit, youth focused venue for art, music, and cinematography.

All shows are $5 or $4 with a canned good.

There is no alcohol served there and most of the people that attend are in high school. Sometimes bands will go to a bar beforehand, though.

It might be wheelchair accessible because it's at a school, but I don't know for sure.

Thirty-Three offers high quality roasts and teas focusing on excellent craft, coffee education, community building, and customer service.

They host free, mostly acoustic music on Saturdays from 7:00-9:00 pm, but they do not have a pa or sound person at this time.

You do not have to be sober to attend, but it is a public space that closes early in the evening.

The Goat House

They are open to most bands within the punk/pop punk/hardcore scene with a few metal exceptions.
