Family call for independent investigation into Dunghutti teenager's death

Jai Wright was killed in a collision with a police car on Saturday. His family says officers have provided inconsistent accounts of what too

I haven't been keeping this blog up to date due to my own mental health, and I have been considering retiring it. However, this news saddened me so much that I logged back in.

16-year-old Indigenous Australian Jai Wright was killed after a collision with an unmarked police car while riding a motorbike. Police have provided conflicting narratives to his family, who are now calling for an independent investigation.

It is typical of NSW Police to do everything they can to negate responsibility, particularly in instances involving First Nations Australians. I hope the independent review will provide Jai's family with truth and closure. I hope the negligence and dishonesty of NSW Police will be brought to light and condemned.

A former cop speaks out about routine, targeted attacks on gay men carried out by police in the 1980s.

When an officer arrested a man who attacked a gay man, he was scolded by his superior: “we don’t arrest people for poofter bashing”.

A judicial inquiry into the attacks on LGBT people in the 80's and 90's is on the cards, since NSW Police did not properly investigate these cases.

These are the people, funded by our taxes, who are out on the streets supposedly keeping us "safe".

This is NOT how you protest if you care about human rights. This is NOT how you protest if you want what is best for the people around you.

No matter what your stance on vaccines or the construction industry is, I hope you can see that deliberately provoking police to the point of violence sets a dangerous precedent for police responses to protests in Australia.

When pepper-spraying, firing rubber bullets and kettling become normalised, it will have dire impacts on people in future protests, whether peaceful or not. The responses of Victoria police in non-protest situations have been seen becoming more violent since the beginning of the pandemic, with vulnerable people being subject to unjustifiable physical abuse. These people - people with disabilities, Indigenous Australians, people with mental health issues, victims of domestic violence - are placed at greater risk when police have increased powers to use violent tactics.

All of that being said, defying public health orders and participating in an event that puts you and everyone around you in danger of contracting a deadly virus because you are angry about your work being shut down for two weeks is an incredibly selfish and unreasonable act. All that these protests will achieve is spreading the virus faster, which will result in extended lockdowns. Abusing healthcare workers who may well be responsible for saving your life in a fortnight is disgusting and pathetic.
