Imagine yourself.
You are 14. You want to try dating. You wouldnāt want to date an 11 year old though, right? No, no way. You want someone your age!
At 15, an 11 year old is out of the question! Thatās just silly. Even 12 is too littleā you might even have a younger sibling that age. Gross!
At 16, would you date someone who is 13? (a middle schooler). You wouldnāt, right? As a high schooler, 13 is just a baby.
This phenomenon is NOT lost on adults. Take it from someone who IS one. Ā As an adult, anyone who is a teenager is a child to us. This is not meant to be condescending; adults see teenagers as people who have growing to do. People who are so much younger, immature even. Small like a younger sibling who needs protecting. If you are underage, and an adult tells you that they see you as an adult and are attracted to you because of it, THIS IS A LIE. They see you as a child. If an adult tells you that they see you, who is underage, as an adult, stay away. That person is attracted to children. That person is a pedophile.
Ravi ZupaāsĀ āOther Avatarā at Hashimoto Contemporary.
Currently on view at Hashimoto Contemporary in New York City is artist Ravi Zupaās outstanding solo exhibition,Ā āOther Avatar.ā
The exhibition features mixed media works on wood, sculpture and a large scale installation. Highlighting his multifaceted studio practice, the artist draws from a variety of sources for inspiration such as technology, mythology, and both Eastern and Western religion, creating a new and unique universe filled with religious and historic figures as well as anthropomorphic creatures.
By definition, the word āavatarā comes from Hindu mythology, and represents a manifestation of a deity or soul released from their bodily form on earth. In todayās digital age, the word has taken on an entirely new and ubiquitous meaning, defining a graphic image which represents a person on the Internet. In todayās rapidly changing world, we are gods of our own universe, with multiple incarnations of ourselves in various abstract dimensions.
For Other Avatar, Zupa melds the symbolism and meaning of mythologies into the current context of todayās world. The artist views the modern day interpretation of the term āavatarā as an example of the universality and lateral connectedness which he feels deeply inspired by. Zupaās richly symbolic work is a representation of these themes.
The exhibition will be on view until July 20th, 2019.
