Gars! (Pictured here is a longnose gar)

Fossil records indicate that gars used to be widespread, occupying every continent except Australia and Antarctica! Currently living species can only be found in North America, though. They can usually be found in shallow, freshwater or brackish water habitats.

Alligator Gar (Atractosteus spatula), family Lepisosteidae, order Lepisosteiformes, found in fresh and brackish water in or near the Mississippi River, and along the Gulf Coast of the U.S.

This large predatory fish can grow up to 8.5 ft. long.

Day sixteen of @fish-daily's fish-uary 2024. The prompt is freshwater fish and I offer the bread-licking longboi with gorgeous ganoid scales: the longnose gar (Lepisosteus osseus)
