“Some time after we were turned, the supernatural world realized they needed a better way to combat us and other vampires. So they created a small band of hunters that were especially strong to fight us. The main concern about these hunters is that if a vampire kills one of them they take on the hunter’s curse- which drives us insane until we take our own life.” He shook his head. “No, it was not Niklaus’s fault, but my father was never the most rational man in the world. As for my mother…she only hated us once she had turned us. We were against nature and she was a witch. She wanted to fix what she considered her mistake.”

Allison's eyes widened and she wondered how many horrible stories she didn't know yet. Every day, every time she talked to Elijah, she learned a lot of new things. "The universe must really hate vampires..." Allison sighed and nervously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Have you ever killed one of the five?" Allison cocked her head and she swallowed, imagining how horrible it must be to be haunted. She couldn't imagine wanting to take her own life, even though her mother had probably wished she could. She just knew that if a curse could push you into there, it must be a bad one. "Sounds like a messed up family." Allison bent her head before she looked up again. "Your mother shouldn't have blamed you for her mistake..."

“Well… you have a fucked up mother and grandfather, so I think you’ll qualify. I wouldn’t know what my mother would have done, to be honest. She… she was already dead by the time everything happened. Maybe I would have had only one messed up parent as well, but I think that’s enough…” He smiled. “But it’s good to hear you still have at least your father after you were so afraid to tell him when you just turned.” At least someone was having some support from home. None of them had any parents left anymore, not after Liz died. Which… still kind of sucked, and not just because what Caroline had done immediately after that. He just missed his friend now and then.

“It’ll happen. Nothing against you, but it happens to the best of us, so I don’t see why you should be the exception. But you’ll get out of it as well,” He had seen that she was strong, that her will power was incredible, especially for the young vampire that she was. “I guess my death toll at the moment is a bit higher than yours, so yes, you’re doing great. Every new vamp kills, so that you managed to prolong it this long…” He shrugged. “It says something about how strong you are.” Not that that meant she couldn’t fall, probably would fall deep when she slipped, but that wasn’t something she needed to hear right now. 

Allison smiled although the smile disappeared when he told her about his own mothers. It indeed seemed as if no one in this town was allowed to have more than once caring parent. Some didn't have any caring parent at all anymore. "I'm sorry about your mother..." It was probably decades ago, but she still wanted to say it. She wondered if, despite everything, she would ever not miss her mother anymore. "My father was never as bad as his father." Allison thought about her dad and couldn't help feeling a little bit proud, more than just a little bit. "He always believes that you shouldn't kill someone before there is a very good reason to do so." After all, most of the monsters were still teenagers. She was still a teenager. "I hope I'll never give him one, because he won't hesitate to do what he has to do."

She knew that one day she would slip. She could feel it. Every time she allowed herself to forget about the hunger, she was closer to killing someone, hurting someone. "I'll make sure it takes as long as it can." It was all she could do, try to keep herself in check for as long as possible, hoping that it would be long enough to survive, hoping that maybe it would long enough for her father not having to see it. "I was lucky that I tried to kill the wrong people." She smiled and shrugged her shoulders. "And I guess that having a messed up hunter family at least makes you that."

He lifted his shoulders easily as he inhaled, dropping them as he breathed out. “Don’t blame yourself. It wasn’t your fault she spiraled out of control     you’re a new vampire and you didn’t know any better. And that’s okay.” Stefan returned the smile, nodding down at his feet and then back up to her. “Wow, okay. That’s good then, right? You unfortunately can’t just live on animal blood, though. You won’t be able to stay strong, which could become a problem if there was ever a time where you needed to protect yourself     which trust me, there will be. I’ve learned that the hard way. But it doesn’t have to come through attacking humans. Damon and I keep human bloodbags in a fridge downstairs. I can show you, if you’d like.”

Everyone kept on saying that it wasn't her fault, but still she couldn't stop feeling guilty. She had seen what it had done to Caroline, she had seen what it had done to the others around her and she had known that it was going to happen. She should have known that if someone told her not to tell anyone, it was because others would talk her out of it. "It still feels like that." She bent her head and stared at her feet. "I will keep that in mind, thank you." She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "But I would still love to learn how to hunt down animals myself." She turned her face away and licked her lips. "I still need a lot more bloodbags than I hoped and I don't want to empty your fridge way too fast."

There were always those who stood by someone, also by Allison, apparently. Luckily… Despite everything she told, he couldn’t help but start laughing when she reveiled the reason for her mother’s bite. “Sorry, it’s not funny… but yeah, you’re most definetely part of the ‘screwed up parents club’ here in Mystic Falls. Welcome.” He stroked her hair, trying to calm her down a bit. “Mine killed Stefan and me, Mikael hunted the Originals for a milennium. It’s all kind of messed up. It’s a miracle we’re all still somehow functioning.”Somehow being the key word in it, probably. But hey… they were still here… 

“Seen them, done them, been on the receiving end of them. Everything. Happens, when you live long.” Most of them consequences of the other. Seeing evil made him do evil. Being the victim brought him to turn off his humanity, and becoming the monster everyone still thought he was. And that monster was still there, nothing had made that clearer than what happened over he last days, weeks. “You beat him once. You can do it again. You’re strong, Allison, or you wouldn’t be here, a completely functional vampire, so fast after you turned.” He shrugged. “I know, I know. I just wasn’t going to plan something for over ten years. I mean, looking forward for a few months is usually already a bit too far.”

Allison laughed along. No, it was far from funny, but it felt good to laugh about it and it felt good to know that she wasn't the only one with a messed up family. She held her breath while Damon told her about his father. "My father is actually doing great." She shrugged her shoulders and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "He's still not that much of a fan of me being a vampire, but he has not thrown me out of the house yet." She smiled again. "And he has not tried to kill me either." She shrugged her shoulders. "Am I still allowed in there?"

"I'll make sure to remember that if one day something bad happens because of me." She nodded and looked at the vampire in front of her. He was older, old enough to have lived two lifetimes. Although she was a vampire for some time now, she could still not completely grasp the idea of living that long. "I still have to hold my breath when someone's bleeding and I wish I could do with less bloodbags a day..." She sighed and looked up at Damon again. "But if you meant that I didn't kill anyone, I guess I'm indeed doing great." Apart from the first few days when she had constantly attacked people without wanting to. "I'm sure it will work out. Take your time."

That… was one fucked up story, if he had to be honest. It was a miracle the girl had made it to be a vampire, and part of him could understand her struggle with what she was and what she was afraid to become a bit. If her mother… “I don’t know if I like your family very much…” He cocked his head. “They probably won’t think any better about vampire than about werewolves, I guess?” Then he shrugged. “You do fit in in the messed up families we all seem to have here, though…” He raised his arm, beckoning her to come closer. “Come here, Pocahontas… I’m not very generous with hugs, but you most definitely deserve one.

“I know you don’t need to be a vampire… I’ve seen humans who were more monstrous than what I am…” Augustines, mostly, but he had seen more of them, everywhere. you didn’t need fangs to kill, and you didn’t need compulsion to force others to do what you wanted. “Hey, you got out of it. You’ve seen your monster and defeated it. That’s something to be proud of, not to be ashamed of.” He’d just do it. Throw a party, get Stefan there, Elena.. whoever wanted to come. Keep out of Caroline’s way, and just have fun. “Good. Give me some time to discuss it with Elena and plan it all, ok? And you can always just come by if you feel like having company. The house is too big anyway.”

Allison bent her head and raised her eyebrows. "Not my entire family is this bad." She swallowed. She was certain that if her mother could force her to do what she has done, she would do so. It was a good thing she couldn't. "You know why my mother got bitten by a werewolf?" Allison turned her face towards Damon and grinned. "She tried to kill my boyfriend." She sighed. It was far from funny, but she had cried so much over it that she couldn't anymore. "I'm officially a member of vampire with messed up family club?" She smiled. "I feel honored." Her head was resting on his shoulders and for a moment she allowed herself to feel the anger and the sadness. "Thanks...I needed it..."

"You must have seen a lot of horrible things in your life." Allison swallowed. She had always tried to be nice, to be strong, to be a fighter. She had slipped on time and she had almost killed the people she cared about most. She knew that one day she would slip as a vampire and then there wouldn't be an almost. There would only be death. "I hope that next time the monster comes out, I'll be strong enough to beat it again." She whispered and started smiling again when he mentioned the party he would be throwing. "Don't worry. We're vampires right? We have all the time in the world."

Alaric looked at her, slightly confused, not having realized how strong his compulsion was. He laid his hand on top of the trunk. “I…you should probably just go home, Allison,” he said gently. He didn’t want to take her any further into this. It wouldn’t be right of him to do that.

Allison nodded and for a moment she frowned her eyebrows. "I'm sorry. I was accidentally using vampire speed, wasn't I?" She cocked her head slightly and frowned her eyebrows when she vaguely smelled blood. "I will be more careful next time." She shook her head. "No, there won't be a next time." Allison turned around and slowly walked away, maybe even too slow.

“I don’t underestimate hunters. They are…tenacious, however, there are only five hunters I will ever give much concern to.” And that was predominantly because he could not kill them without taking on the hunter’s curse. “He became worse after he was turned. He was not a kind man to begin with, but mother turned him into a vampire hunting vampire, set on destroying his own children. But his focus was always set on Niklaus.” He slowly nodded. “It was a betrayal my father could never get over.”

Allison frowned her eyebrows and cocked her head. "What makes those five hunters special?" She felt her curiosity taking over again and she was wondering how little her father actually knew. She had always been amazed by his knowledge, by the amount of books in their library. Now she was wondering where all the other information had been all this time. "It's not like Klaus could help it that he wasn't his son, right?" Allison sighed and she licked her lips, not sure if she wanted to know what had happened to Klaus' real father. "What made your mother hate you so much?"

He started to laugh. “You did that? Well… I’m glad to say I’m not the only one making bad choices in those circumstances…” Sounded like something he could do, to be honest. “I just didn’t need daggers for those kind of things…” He cocked his head. “Your friends? What happened? If you want to talk about it, that is…” He thought for a moment. He hadn’t talked a lot with Elena about the time he was gone. Just… about what happened after he got back, about the future they had now. As if they had been afraid to talk about what was before… He shook his head. “Nope… I think we’re kind of avoiding those months.” He didn’t even know if he wanted to know… it reminded him a lot of a time he didn’t want to think about. He smirked. “Yes, please… I’m a bit sick of her constantly telling me I’m not behaving. Or threatening to kill me if I’m not behaving like she wants me to.” He shrugged. “Well.. at least it’s good to know that my friend and my girlfriend get along somehow.” A thought popped up in his head… “You know… maybe I’ll just throw some kind of party. Give me a bit of time to work it out, ok? We have some things to celebrate, after all.”

Allison took a deep breath and shrugged her shoulders. Yes, she had totally done that and she still regretted it. "Yes, I did." She nervously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "It's a long story and by then I didn't even know half of it." She rolled her eyes and still couldn't understand why Scott had never told her. "My mother was bit by a werewolf." She turned her head away for a moment. "And my family code forced her to commit suicide before she could turn into one." Allison swallowed. She was still missing her mother, despite their differences, despite the fact that she had never understood why she had loved Scott. "My grandfather kept on telling me that this was what werewolves did, that this was how things ended when we got to close to them, that we had to do something about it before the werewolves would think they could do everything." Allison took a little break. "So I agreed to help him kill Derek's pack." She felt a little sick while she was telling the story, but she didn't want to make it prettier than it was. It wasn't pretty. "And that's how I ended up stabbing my own friends with chinese ring daggers." She shook her head and looked up at the vampire in front of her. "So, you don't need to be a vampire to be a monster." It always ended with that. Every story. Every time she told Derek about herself. It was exactly why she was afraid what would happen if she would lose control as a vampire one day. "I don't know if I want to know what my friends are doing now, but I'm sure that you were missed a lot." She grabbed his arm for a short moment and smiled. "And that party sounds amazing. I can't wait to talk with Elena about other stuff than how to turn her boyfriend into a vampire again."

He shook his head. “Believe me, they haven’t. Everyone grieves in another way. Some just go on, others drown themselves in alcohol, others… float lanterns…” Somehow he wished he could let go of what he felt as easily as it was to let go of such a lantern, but that wasn’t who he was. He smiled slightly. “I guess so… at least according to Caroline…” He had heard some thing about drugs, but he hadn’t wanted to press Elena for everything. Looking forward was better than looking back. “Rather you than I, to be honest. We don’t exactly see eye to eye at the moment…” He didn’t want to be chastised for everything that he did, no matter how stupid it was, and that was all Caroline did, lately. “He raised his eyebrows. “About me? Should I get worried?” Then he shrugged. “You should come by the house sometime… I’m sure you two can get along just fine.”

Allison shrugged her shoulders and laughed. "And some grab their chinese ring daggers and start trying to kill their friends." She bent her head and realized how much she missed them. How much she missed Scott, how much she missed Isaac. But Damon was right. They were grieving and she had to let them do so in their own way. "Have...have you ever asked how she had grieved you?" Allison cocked her head and stared at the vampire. She wasn't sure if she would ask her friends. She wasn't sure if she wanted to know how Scott and Isaac were mourning her. "I can keep Caroline distracted, if you want?" Allison smiled and stared at Damon for a moment. She wasn't sure how he did it, but she started to feel better in a weird way. "No, we were talking about how to turn you into a vampire again and how happy we were that not everyone believed your "i'm a monster" nonsense." Allison tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "And I would love coming by the house soon! Just let me know when I'm welcome and I'll be there."

He was glad to see that her smile returned, even when it was a bit hesitant. “Not everyone is like me and just drinks his grief away while keeping a seat reserved for his dead best friend.” He never talked about that time when he really hadn’t been ready to let go of Ric, but somehow it seemed fitting. “And the last time I was the one dead, so I have no idea what they did back then… It’ll be alright, ok?” He smirked. “She’s probably somewhere out there thinking about her sins. Or mine. Probably mine, so she doesn’t have to think about what she has done.” He shrugged. “Have you met Elena yet? I think you could be great friends, actually.”

Allison stared at him and for a moment she tried to imagine Damon next to an empty seat behind a drink. She had seen him miserable once, and she was glad she had not seen this. "I don't know what they're doing, but I'm sure they won't have forgotten about me." She bent her head and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "I'm sure that Elena must have missed you a lot." She had talked with Elena about Damon. She knew how much she loved him and she knew how heartbroken she felt right now, and she knew her friends weren't even dead. She was the one being dead. "I hope she comes back soon. This town is a little boring without her." Allison laughed for a moment and nodded when Damon mentioned Elena. "Yes, we've talked about you for a while. I haven't seen her since then."

He placed his finger under her chin, making her look up at him. “See? They’re probably all sad about you being gone, making all kinds of road trips just to forget about what happened.” He shrugged. “Not a lot of people call someone who’s dead, ok? It’s not you, they’ll come back, and then you can show them you’re still here.” He smiled. “Well… we might have to do something about that… you need more than just one friend. Even I need more than that.”

Allison couldn't help but smiling a little. She had not thought about it like that. Maybe her friends just didn't want to be here. Maybe they just need to get away from the place where they had lost her. If only she could just send them a text to tell them everything was alright, but she didn't want to freak them out. "I hope so." She bent her head and thought about it for a moment. "I'll be counting the days until I see them again." She smiled back. "I haven't seen Caroline for a while." She grinned. "Else I would have said I have two."

Elijah frowned, recalling the conversation they had once had about their fathers. “Yes, perhaps that would be best. However, my brother is in possession of the only thing that can kill an original vampire, so I doubt these hunters would have much of any success.” He gave a slow nod. “He burned the opera house and put on a gruesome show to torment Niklaus.” His brow furrowed. “He came to me before that,” he said, telling her something he had not told anyone else, “He wanted me to give up Niklaus, to help him rid the world of the hybrid bastard child of his wife. He turned on me when I told him that I would always choose Niklaus. My father was a cruel man, but especially after he was turned. But it was not all terrible. I believe Niklaus and Rebekah went on, after that, to have quite a bit of fun in Chicago in the twenties. I kept our father off of their trail as long as I could.”

Allison licked her lips, but her mind was already set on not telling anyone anything. "Don't underestimate the hunters." She smiled. "I know they're nothing compared to you, but I also know what happens to people underestimating them." She had seen it happening with Derek, she had seen it happening with the entire Hale family. "Has your father always been like that?" Allison was happy to be able to change the subject. Talking about her father, about her family, about the hunter that has become a vampire, made her sad, more sad than she should be. "He sounds sadistic and cruel. I can not imagine that a father could do something like that to his own children." She shook her head and felt her stomach almost throwing up. "All of that was just because Niklaus was a bastard son?" She raised her eyebrows and had to look away for a short moment. "I'm glad he never managed to get to you."

“Either way, it’s not your fault, Allison,” he told her, pursing his lips slightly. “Us knowing still might not have helped avoid it, and Caroline sure wouldn’t let anyone get in the way of what she wanted, trust me.” Stefan sighed, running a hand up through his hair and raising his eyebrows slightly for a moment. “You’re new at this, you’ll learn. It will take a while to adjust to everything, and that’s fine     as you have us to help you through it,” he added with a smile. “Your father? Is he a hunter?”

Allison smiled and bent her head staring at her feet. Stefan was right. If there was one thing she had learned about Caroline, it was that Caroline didn't let anything or anyone get between her and her plans. "I wish I had known what it meant when she had told me." She shrugged her shoulders. "Maybe I would have been able to talk it out of her." She sighed and swallowed, before she shook her head. It had happened and she couldn't change anything about it anymore. "I couldn't have wished for any better help." Allison smiled and she felt a little bit of excitement running through her veins. "Yes, he's okay with me being a vampire. As long as feed on bloodbags of animals. I'm sure he won't hesitate to do with me what he does with others when I ever attack a human."
