My family is going through a lot rn. I have 2 releases that I want to get out this year, but it feels like I'm trying to run a marathon in quicksand.

Okay, I've had a sec to process things and sleep. I'm not used to sharing stuff about my personal life, but because this might have an affect on whether or not I can release music in the near future, I think it's important.

My dad had a stroke 10 years ago. 2 years ago, some of his behaviors/decisions were extremely alarming to my mom, my bf, and me. To put it simply: he was doing things that were not normal for a person with healthy adult cognitive functions.

My family was concerned that my dad might have dementia. I was between jobs at the time, and decided to quit looking for a new one so he wasn't left home alone during the day.

Lately, his cognitive problems have gotten worse. We had to take him to the ER about 2 months ago. He was dismissed under the assumption that he'd improperly taken his meds. For about a week, he was confused, disoriented, having difficulty walking, etc. These problems got significantly worse at night, so we were under the impression that he was beginning to sundown.

About a month ago, out of nowhere, he started having the same problems one night. It only lasted one night, and he went back to normal the next day.

We finally got him to the doctor yesterday, and he passed the dementia test. The doctor thinks he's been in cognitive decline since his stroke. Which is leaving my family stressed and confused over why he appears to be sundowning, and how we're supposed to properly care for him.

At the visit yesterday, the doctor was more concerned with the results of his blood test, which indicated a possible late stage cancer. I have a reason to not panic over this just yet, but he is going in for additional examinations early next week.

I'm trying to continue being a voca-p despite everything that's going on. New releases have been slow because I'm trying to balance housework, being an unpaid caregiver, being an available partner for my SO, and the mountain of work that comes with being a small voca-p with social anxiety.

I have 2 releases planned for this year. They're both on a deadline, so if I don't finish them on time, they'll have to be put off until next year. If it does turn out that my dad has cancer, however, I'll probably go on another indefinite hiatus.

Going through my backlog means finding old half-finished songs I've forgotten about. This was a Finale file that must've been forgotten when I started working on my 2024 Halloween song (N005) and then had to scramble after MakeMusic announced they were pulling the plug on Finale.

I converted the .musx to .xml, imported it into Dorico, and then added the vocal line to SV2 so Mai could sing it.

Something about this song is very nostalgic. It reminds me of Colors and Sirens Sing. At the time, I think I was re-learning how to write music after a 4+ year hiatus. There's also a certain...Finale-ness about it.

The way I write music has changed a lot since switching to Dorico in late 2024. This mostly comes down to software limitations, since Finale couldn't run VSTi like Vocaloid and Synthesizer V, nor did it allow importing drum patterns (at least in a way that fit my workflow). Prior to switching to Dorico, the vocals and drums were always a disconnected part of the process.

Antidote is so far removed from my current workflow that I just don't think it'll ever be finished.

𝕬𝖙𝖔𝖕 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝕾𝖓𝖔𝖜𝖞 𝕳𝖎𝖑𝖑

So...Vocagathering was a bit stressful for me this year 😅 I began writing an untitled track back in October, but decided that the project didn't feel right for an event like Vocagathering.

So after the release of Yun Hua, I started another song called Queen of Lies, which can be heard here. Queen of Lies is the messy breakup song between Queen Belladonna and Edelstein Von Krähennest, so it required a lot of work on previous motifs, like Belladonna's Theme (Rosewein), Edelstein's theme (Krähennest), Prince Duncan's theme (Wintermourn), and 3 versions of Alive in You (Sapphire, Ruby, and Amethyst).

I put all of that on hold to work on West Mourning Spire for the Saros contest. After I was done with West Mourning Spire, I wanted to get something done for Eleanor Week. Buuuut then I injured my back and had to stay in bed for 1 1/2 weeks (๑ᵕ⌓ᵕ̤) I chose to remake Blood and Wine so I had enough time and energy to participate in both Eleanor Week and Vocagathering.

After Eleanor Week, I started a song called The Duke and the Blacksmith's Daughters. It was a very ambitious song that heavily used SynthV's choir features. I couldn't get it to sound right, and with the deadline coming up and my burnout getting worse, I had to abandon it for something less intense.

2 weeks before Vocagathering, my dad had to go to the ER. The following week was extremely stressful. I ate and slept very little, and my bf and I had to sleep in shifts so that someone was always awake to watch him. Thankfully, he started recovering the following weekend. By Wednesday, he was more or less back to normal, and it gave me enough time to finish writing, mixing, and making the art/pv for Atop the Snowy Hill.

I am very tired lol.
