âHave you tried WD-40 on that?â - almostxcaught
N-no?" He looked at the woman with a puzzled expression. "I'm not sure wd-40 will do much for an amputated finger..."
She gave him a small, rueful smile, âAt least youâre okay. No carrots needed.â The redhead smirked, âOh? Thatâs funny. Thatâs where I was headed to. So yeah, Iâll go with you. Iâll drive.â
He had been more nervous to ask her to the bar with him than he had realised, and so when he agreed, he visibly relaxed and smiled a little.
"Okay, great, lead the way"
Lyla motioned for him to walk first and then took lead. The hospital parking lot was small but thank goodness she has found a spot for her truck near the front. She went to the passenger side first and opened the door, âAfter you, my poor man. Letâs get you liquored up and back home.â

âOh lord. That donât sound good,â she cleared her throat and was sad to see the nurse come out for him. Lyla flashed him a smile and nodded, âSee ya. You try not to lose any more digits!â
Adam eventually left the room and hospital, hand bandaged up, on his way out, he passed the woman again.
"Hey. How did you get on?"
Just being released from her stitching, Lyla pauses at the nurses station to finish signing papers. She glanced up as he came by, âHey, did alright with just three stitches. How âbout you? Need someone to drive you home?â
âI found the cutest stuffed animal when I went shopping the other day.â There may or may not be a black and red wolf plushie behind Riverâs back.
@almostxcaught
âUh oh. I got a feelinâ you got something bad behind your back. Like a box oâ lacy under garments from that smelly store in the mall,â Lyla chuckled nervously.
âThat would be mean. No, this is infinitely better.â She moved the plushie from behind her back and held it out. âI thought itâd be a good first item for the nursery.â
âOh-oh! Thatâs precious and clever,â she got up from the sofa to look at the plushie better. âThatâs sweet. I like the colors, too.â Lyla brushed her fingers over the soft fur and smirked, âMan, it wonât be long before that kid gets here.â
âSo there may be word around town that Iâm pregnant. And a certain someone told me heâs coming back. Heâs not happy.â
@almostxcaught
â...â
âThatâs alotta information to process. Who is he? And should we be happy about a baby?â

âNot really. Been here two weeks and start working next week. Iâll be the new townâs friendly deputy,â Lyla cradled her hand in her lap and glanced back at him. âIs it just me or does this place give off creepy vibes? I donât mean any offense.â

She grimaced again with a shake of her head, âSorry to hear that.â She let out a soft sigh and held up her right hand that was wrapped up in a dish towel, âTried to slice my thumb off while cutting carrots.â
Adam couldn't help but laugh.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't laugh, but we make a good pair", he snorted, "I'm Adam, by the way"
She laughed, head rolling back for a second, âIâm Lyla. Yeah, we might make a good pair. Probably shouldnât be around blades anymore though.â

âWhat about duct tape?â She was serious for a second more before flashing him a grin, âBad jokes. Sorry. What happened?â
Cracking jokes in an emergency room probably wasnât the best of ideas.
"Duct tape might work" he laughed and nodded but the shrugged.
"I, uh, I got it caught...at work..." That would be a passable excusez right?
âOh, lord. Thatâs sounds terrible,â she winced, leaning over to look at his hand. âAt least itâs a flesh wound. You can live without your finger. But I hear if you get to missing it, you can super glue a carrot on the stump and it works the same.â Lyla let out another soft chuckle and sat back, crossing her legs, âYouâd think theyâd get you back there so you could save the finger. You got your missing tip?â

Alan had been driving all night. He figured it was safer to travel by dark- not that it made a difference for the dead. They were rapidly loosing their sense of sight anyway, depending on smell and hearing only to detect their prey- not that it made them any less lethal, especially when they grouped up on you. It was the living he was trying to avoid. Ever since it became clear the the pandemic wasn't going to be contained, people had become more dangerous than the dead- going over corpses to preserve their own lives. Literally It had been two weeks since all official institutions had fallen. By now, most people were either on the run- searching for parts of the country that had not yet been overrun, or had flocked together in tight knit groups.
Usually Alan avoided driving through towns, sticking to backroads with a clear view of his surroundings. Tonight, however, he found himself driving through the center of town, the engine light indicating that he would have to find a way to fill up the tank soon- or in the worst case scenario find an alternative mode of transport. Luckily, the neon lights of a gas station awaited him at the end of the road. They probably operated on a timer set back-up generator, because he hadn't seen a place with electricity for weeks. It seems am andoned, yet, he is reluctant to turn of the engine, and he takes a moment to listen carefully before exiting his car.
The best find that could happen was seeing the old gas station just outside of âcity limitsâ of Ruby be lit up like a beacon in the night. She had tried to avoid that place for as possible since it was so bright at night, but Curtis Oil Company in Chesterfield had stopped servicing all station a day ago and that evening, Lyla was sad to find it had gone bone dry. People had sucked down every last drop from every last station in Chesterfield. Now, she had to go into Grits Nâ Grocercies whether she liked it or not.
It couldnât wait any longer. She needed to get a few things from inside. The doors were locked by metal bar covers and the same for the windows. Broken as they were, glass everywhere from Lord knows what, she was careful to check the back first. She didnât want the front to be an obvious entrance point but the four padlocks on the back door meant she would have to go back to the house for her lock cutters and she didnât have the gas for a trip back. It was now or never.
Lyla let out a heavy sigh as she returned to her truck and grabbed her tool bag. She cursed herself for not bringing the cutters to begin with. All she had was a wire cutter and there was no way she could get through the locks with that. But she had some lock picking tools! It would take more time than she wanted to waste to get in, but she would.
With two locks picked, Lyla paused when she heard an engine coming. It wasnât loud but she heard it coming from a mile away. Her heart jumped into her throat. She couldnât help but to feel fear. Most people these days didnât tend to react well to one another. Alive or dead.
Her hand rested on her holster at her hip. Years of working in law enforcement had her trained to de-escalate situations, but nowadays, it was a different story. She let out a harrowed sigh as she heard the vehicle pull into the lot and engine turn off.
âFuck,â Lyla whispered to herself. âFuck, fuck, fuck.â She got up and hurried, half bent, to the side of the gas station to hide beside the garbage bin. She needed to see who she was dealing with first and make an executive decision whether or not to engage in conversation.

The Walking Dead:
Before the outbreak, Lyla was sheriff of a small town in South Carolina called Ruby. She had been sheriff for five years, and a deputy for ten before being elected. She loved her job, loved the townspeople, and loved her husband, Chris. At least she did until he left her to be with his mistress that he had been having an affair with for fourteen years. They had a son, but Lyla and Chris never had children.
The outbreak forced Lyla off her farm and away from Ruby. She tried to live there for a year with a group in the small communal hall, but once the biggest herd came through, they had to start roaming all over the county, then state. By the time they reached Florida, the group of twenty had dwindled to two; Lyla and a ten year old kid called Jaxon who died after falling from a roof during an escape one night. After that, she vowed to never travel with anyone ever again. The responsibility and guilt of losing so many people so quickly forever weighs on her heart.
Werewolf: ( for Harry Potter & CAOS )
Essentially the same but without the outbreak. The only difference is an attack during a full moon. Lyla has been working the night after several incident reports of a large bear in the area. The sightings only happened at night and most of the victims were livestock from local farms. The incidents didnât start happening until the new doctor opened up a small practice in town. Too bad Lyla hadnât put two and two together until he showed up at her hospital room with flowers and a long explanation of her future âmonthliesâ.
This is an extremely adaptable verse.
More verses will be added but these are just the ones for now.
