You make him irrational, and I - a person who has been in love with him since she was 14 - am deeply jealous of his feelings for you. What I'm trying to say is: He really really really really really likes you.

Yeah. I mean they were undefeated even when they were teenagers and before Guts even showed up.

I just think if Guts weren't there, Griffith would like. Come up with a different strategy. I do think it would have taken significantly longer to make the headway they did, and they would've lost a lot more people both in general and against, say, Boscogn. But Griffith himself says that Guts' tendencies are already accounted for in his plans. His strategies rely on/give Guts an outsized role because Guts is there to give an outsized role to.

And aside from that, when Guts left, the war was over, the conspiracy to kill Griffith had been stamped out... it was the time when Griffith needed him the least... as a soldier.

The fact that he still freaked the fuck out just indicates that the issue wasn't Guts' military capabilities.
