James Potter is not a healer. His is a potioneer—the Order of the Phoenix's lead potioneer, in fact. So when their top field fighter—Lily Evans—comes to him for treatment after a particularly rough mission, he helps the best way he knows how: a vial of freshly brewed Skele-Gro and a dose of laughter. Written for Jily Week 2024's Day 4 Prompt—Flip The Script.

“I was told to see a man about some fresh Skele-Gro?” From where he sits hunched over a cauldron of simmering Dreamless Sleep Potion, James looks up to where a figure—clearly cradling a broken arm—leans against the doorframe. Her red hair is slightly backlit from a lamp in the hallway, and James’ stomach twists uncomfortably as he takes on the pallor of Lily Evans’ face. In an instant, he’s muttering a stasis incantation for the cauldron’s flame and blearily blinking through the vapors swirling around the room as he hops to his feet and strides over to a dormant cauldron to ladle out some thick, yellow potion into a small vial. “Merlin, Evans, why didn’t Jones treat you with the rest of them? Sit down.”

Lily goes foraging. James tags along. That's the official version of events, anyway. (James brought himself along, because he’s impossible and obnoxious and when he found her skirting the edges of the forest that morning, he scoffed: “The good stuff is inside the forest, Evans. Everyone knows that.” She still wouldn’t have followed him in, though, if not for his next words. “Cowards miss all the best cauldron fires,” he said, striding into the thick brush with all the confidence in the world, and well. Lily is a lot of things, but a coward has never been one of them).

Dear Lily,

Well, Homer isn’t back yet, which I can only assume means he’s been seduced by those majestic American mountains one hears so much about. Or perhaps he’s decided he’s had enough of dreary old England and has gone off to start his new life as a cowboy. I assume that’s the sort of thing most Americans do, though I admit I have only a cursory knowledge on this front, having never been to the States myself. My dad did once, though. Spent a week on a Muggle dude ranch out in Wyoming. Or was it Wisconsin? I can’t remember, somewhere terribly American sounding where they have a lot of cows. Anyway, it was a great laugh, according to him, so maybe Homer’s onto something.

If he doesn’t turn up soon, I’ll send this letter via Virgil, my parents’ rather doddering old owl. I’m not strictly speaking supposed to use him for cross-country journeys, but London isn’t all too far, after all, and though it’s only been a few days, I am anxious to hear how you are settling into life with that charming sister of yours. Do let me know.

The quill that had been scrawling this cheerful missive paused, and James Potter scrubbed a hand over his face, frowning intently. Nearly a full minute passed before the ink-dipped nib of his quill returned to the parchment.
