Interesting Japanese Culture for Kids
There are so many aspects of Japanese culture that can be introduced to children. Here, we are going to talk about Japanese festivals. The major festival for children is undoubtedly the Japanese Childrenās Day (åä¾ć®ę„ kodomo no hi) which is celebrated each year on the 5th of May. As you can see from the picture below, a child is holding a carp streamer known as koinobori and wear a samurai helmet. If you go to Japan during the festival, you will see carp streamers hang outside houses. A family will hang carp streamers representing the father, the mother, and the children. Traditionally, Japanese Childrenās Day was known as the Boyās Day.
Another festival for children is the Dollās Day (éē„ć hinamatsuri), which is for girls only, hence it is also known as the Girlsā Day. It is celebrated each year on the 3rd of March. The main activity is the display of dolls in the home altar. Girls will invite their friends home to have a little tea party while enjoying traditional desserts made especially for this occasion. Girls will celebrate this day until they are 10 years old. The dolls are usually passed from generation to generation and are quite expensive.
