I had to try it to believe it but Mexican-style hot chocolate is so tasty . It’s flavoured with cinnamon and vanilla. And yes that’s a bread roll on the side!
Made from the maguey plant which is native to Mexico, we sampled the drink Mezcal which comes from the Oaxaca region. Not to be confused with tequila, several Mezcal brands still carry the tradition of adding a worm to the bottle to lock in its vigour! Someone on our Christmas list is even receiving a bottle…
In a tiny village just outside of Oaxaca we visited a family that made Zapotec Indian rugs. Handicrafted from wool, they're all dyed using local, natural pigments like cactus and lime and some can take up to three weeks to make. We're now proud owners of the stripy one called sunset.
The archeological site of Mitla is derived from Aztec language as 'the place of the dead'. The impressive ruins are set amongst a picturesque valley in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Two hours southeast of Oaxaca is home to Hierve de Agua (the water boils). The natural white rock formation looks like petrified waterfalls and has impressive springs that you can swim in if it's not too chilly!
In Oaxaca you can visit the oldest, largest and widest tree in the world named Arbol de Tule (The tree of Tule). This 2,000 year old Cyprus Tree is in a town called Santa Maria de Tol.
Within the Oaxacan cultures museum is Francisco Burgoa Library which contains over 23,000 books encompassing subjects based on the history of Oaxaca.
The Oaxacan cultures museum is located in an old convent next to the church of Santa Domingo. It houses a huge collection of objects including, ancient, colonial and ethnic - each revealing the rich history of Oaxaca.
Southwestern Mexico is Oaxaca City - the capital and largest city within the Mexican state. Full of charm and history, although it's a big city there's still a relaxed feel to it.
More of the unforgettable and spoilt rotten treat. This magical stay totally cured the wanderlust and we literally did not want to leave the hotel!
Given we had an amazing hotel to enjoy, we decided to see Mexico City via an open top tour bus. A great way to get a panoramic overview of the city if you're limited for time.
Slight upgrade from the hostels we’re used to….complimentary shampoo amd strawberrys from the hotel too!

First stop in Mehico city - hole in the wall taco bar. Less than $ a pop.
Guac and spicey salsa just standard condiments. Lovely stuff!
Now that's my type of Christmas tree, Mexico City.

Loved this quirky little recycled garden in the mountain highlands of Boquete, Panama.
