So my dad used to teach human evolution at the University of Minnesota, right? And his favorite thing was discussing Native American cultures and bashing misogyny.Ā
So heād start off class by goingĀ āRaise your hand if you think you know why men hunted and women stayed back in the settlementsā and most kids would raise their hands. Heād list off a few various reasons and kids would slowly start participating. Then heād goĀ āHow many of you think itās because men are strongerā and of course most of the males would raise their hands with a few girls. Heād then proceed to rip apart the patriarchal views they had all been taught.Ā āNo,ā heād say,Ā āItās because if five men went out and three or two came back no one would bat an eye. Theyād grieve sure, but society would go on. Now if five women went out and three or two came back you know what would happen? Society would collapse.ā
And it was true. For many Native American cultures the only reason women did what they did was because the men couldnāt do it. We are (usually) taught a twisted, self-aggrandizing form of history despite evidence suggesting the complete opposite of it.Ā
This was present in a lot of cultures in the past before white colonization (see: imperialism and genocide)
In Australia the Aborigines believed that women were more powerful than men and closer to gods because of their ability to give birth, and men would make themselves bleed just to be like women when they came of age
In the Philippines many people held practices which celebrated a womanās first menstruation, encouraged free sexual exploration before marriage for young men and women, and believed women to be spiritual leaders, so that the only way a āmanā could be one was to become a woman (transwomen were able and even encouraged to marry, and were identified as women within the community)
Also in the Philippines economic structures defined power, so a man who was poorer than his wife would take her name, and daughters would inherit and become heads of the family if they were the eldest
Westerners love to flout how great they are at women empowerment when it comes to other cultures that treat women badly, but actively try to hide the fact that there are thousands of other cultures who treated women better centuries ago than they do even todayĀ
And thatās a fact.Ā
so I was talking to the polish guy and because I didnāt know how to say āIām going to the shopsā i guessed and said idÄ na sklepy and he started laughing but didnāt correct me so when it next came up I had to use the same phrase which made him laugh again and I finally asked him today what was the correct way to say it and why did he find it amusing and he said that to him idÄ na sklepy means kind of āI am going to conquer the shops!ā and that he imagined me standing on the shops refusing entry to people because I was controlling the shops and he said the reason he didnāt correct me was because he thought it was an interesting way of saying āIām going to the shopsā and he didnāt want me to stop and that he wanted it to take off in poland
i would just like to point out that the recent conversation surrounding the male birth control trials isnāt justĀ ālol weak men canāt deal with side effectsā itās the fact that when they were testing hormonal birth control for women in the 50s & 60s, the side effects were much worse, and the women who participated in them, mostly in puerto rico, were not told about the side effects or that the drug was experimental
and THEN when women dropped out, they started using incarcerated women as their guinea pigs, and then despite the fact that some scientists who participated in the original trials were likeĀ āuh i donāt think this is actually good, itās making a lot of these women sick,ā the pharmaceutical industry & fda were likeĀ ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ and approved it for the general population anyways, without really warning women about the potential for all these negative side effects
and THEN researchers basically ceased to do any type of research on side effects like depression and decreased libido for 50 years, despite the fact that women were still complaining about them, and because there was noĀ āhard evidenceā of these side effects, a lot of doctors basically just assumed women were exaggerating or making it up. and that continued until the first major study of depression in women who take hormonal contraceptives was released just. this. year.
so yeah, the patriarchy. *waves flag*

oh, and fun fact: even after this new study was released, a lot of the scientific community is still being likeĀ ābut can we PROVE these women arenāt just depressed because theyāre LOVESICK?ā
the sooner u realize u aināt special and being āspecialā never mattered the sooner u can let go of having to prove yourself & the sooner u can let go of whatever unexamined resentment u might have
