one last half formed thought: i think a common misconception that people who bring up the matchmaking system as proof of flawed writing/poor worldbuilding have is that shannon messenger wrote the elven world to be a perfect world. and obviously this isn’t true, because depiction of a topic does not imply endorsement. things like the matchmaking system and the treatment of talentless people are brought up TO be criticized!

however, even though the elven world is not meant to be perfect, it IS framed as superior to humans. elves are explicitly stated to be above “shallow” human bigotry, and many characters from all parts of the elf world express some sort of sentiment that humans are backwards and destructive in comparison to humans. which does mean that a lot of things depicted within the elf world, like its gender roles and cultural homogeneity, which are less an intentional writing choice and more a byproduct of shannon’s own bias seeping through, and also aren’t explicitly criticized within the text, end up being implicitly endorsed because they exist as part of this superior society . does that make sense. like the fact that they exist in kotlc doesn’t mean they’re being endorsed but the fact that elves are seen as superior means that any biases that don’t go unchallenged do end up being endorsed in a way.
