Winter dawn is the color of metal, The trees stiffen into place like burnt nerves. All night I have dreamed of destruction, annihilations
Sylvia Plath (via spelllcraft)
vclatiile:
this was roxanne’s time to shine, no doubt about it. every move she made was calculated; her back poised straight, head held high like she owned the room. in that moment, she believed she did. it was so e a s y to pretend to be someone she wasn’t; the girl had been doing it most of her life, so this was an opportunity of a lifetime. not to mention, roxanne loved dresses. with a twirl of her gown - stolen, of course, she glided around the room, weaving in and out of crowds, looking but never touching. her slender fingers were ACHING to slip something into her pocket, but one wrong move could destroy everything. a commotion behind her barely took her interest, but roxanne threw a look over her shoulder anyway, and coyly smiled. “Thieves. odds are they’re not even real and he’s trying to pull one over you. or maybe, they are real and his prices are just shitty. fifty galleons for that? some people pay almost seventy, sometimes.” she didn’t actually know, but it felt smart to say.
surprised by the sudden appearance of his company, albus simply offered the woman a polite nod, a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes appearing on his lips. “seventy galleons is a lot to pay for something that looks fake — if only merchants weren’t so petty,” he said, his eyes lingering on the stall he’d just walked away from. perhaps, he couldn’t help but think, he might be able to snag the gloves in the chaos that would undoubtedly be unleashed when the battle started. unsure of whether or not the woman next to him was friend or foe, albus cleared his throat, motioning to a different booth. “and look at the wares there,” he said, a touch of complaint to his tone, “expensive, but the fine silk that the merchant boasts is undoubtedly magicked — it’d probably turn back to rough spun wool the instant you got home.” albus glanced at the other, green eyes searching her masked features, trying to discern who she was.
It is violent that we cannot touch each other, yet. It’s a war crime. It should be illegal that my fingers still haven’t learned the notches of your back. I think about holding your wrist in the O of my thumb and my index finger. I think about kissing the blue veins there. I think about careful mouth touches, and the tender of you. The warm, soft hollow of you, and how I lose my bottom lip wondering about yours. I’ll kiss you there, I promise. I promise.”
Azra.T., “These wrists, these eyes, these praying hands.” (via jebalmighty)
“Do we really have to leave cookies for Santa?”
“yes,” albus said, a hint of finality in his tone that left no room for protest. “it’s good luck. didn’t anyone ever tell you that?” albus was carefully arranging the plate as he spoke, taking care not to break the biscuits as he did. “grandma weasley showed me how to make these with my wand, frost them and everything, but i like doing it the old fashioned way.” nowadays, though, it took ages for them to be able to scrounge together the ingredients for decorating. “d’you think it’s kind of insulting to santa if i put the reindeer on top of him?” he mused, frowning at his placement. even biscuits, according to albus, deserved careful thought and consideration.
“Oh, put some mistletoe on my butt and kiss it.” ( Teddy )
“that was pretty weak,” albus said, jerking his plate of biscuits out of teddy’s grasp yet again, “if you want some, go make some.” albus plucked one of the biscuits up off the plate, smirking at teddy and popping it in his mouth, chewing slowly, pretending to savor it. he groaned a bit, his eyes rolling back in his head. “merlin, you’re really missing out,” he goaded, licking his lips once he’d swallowed, a smirk appearing just moments later.

—- alexander rolled his eyes at albus’ mention of the small talk they typically took part in around here. it was all so SHALLOW. there was a WAR happening, people like alexander and albus have to hide underground, their families and friends are HUNTED and KILLED for believing in a world where all of magic-kind should be treated equally– and all THESE people got to dance around at a party, no fear for their lives in sight, for following and believing in something so AWFUL. “oh, should i use your real name? you KNOW what these people would do if they heard your name.” he spoke in a HUSHED whisper, willing to take the gnomes in his room if it meant he didn’t expose the entire order and get them potentially KILLED. he nodded slowly when albus mentioned who wrong it all felt, in complete agreement about that. it felt like a B E T R A Y A L. he felt like he was double-crossing the order– double-crossing one of his CLOSEST friends, SCORPIUS– just by breathing this air. as backwards as it was, he almost felt like he’d be MORE comfortable when the fighting began. “oh, don’t be DRAMATIC. there are plenty of people in white here, just look around.” he muttered with a little laugh. he blended in ENOUGH, but he still stood out. “i could’ve been wearing PURPLE, like that guy.” he replied with a little nod of his head towards a stranger in an elaborate, almost REFLECTIVE purple robe ensemble.
had he not been wearing the mask, albus would likely have been pinching the bridge of his nose. alexander had a way of getting to him, though to this day albus had no idea why he allowed it to happen. “what? cry in fear at the return of the greatest wizard of all time?” albus quipped lowly, a low snort of amusement falling from his lips. he finished off his glass of champagne, sort of frowning when he realized he had nothing left to drink. “this is pretty good,” he said, not used to the luxury. sometimes they could find firewhiskey (if the adults didn’t polish it off first), but actual, expensive alcohol was few and far between. “right, the girls,” albus retorted, his teeth grazing over his bottom lip as he smirked. “i think purple would’ve suited you. but not like that — that looks all tacky on him. poor bloke.” truth be told, albus didn’t know much about dress robes and what colors looked proper on people, but he didn’t need to be told to know that the odd stranger looked very out of place. “enjoying yourself? i keep sneaking those shrimp puff things, they’re delicious.” it was hard, standing there and making smalltalk while the weight of the world had settled itself upon the shoulders of the order. albus wanted to discuss plans, details, what would happen if something went wrong — but he couldn’t. not here, not out in the open where they could be overheard. regardless of whether or not he felt himself pulling away from the order, he didn’t want to be obvious about his potential change in allegiance.

the portkey had been incinerated in the battle, and albus’s only thought had been to grab scorpius and apparate away from the location. the first place he’d thought of, the place that had popped into his brain almost instantly, was a small neighborhood in surrey. panting, albus dropped to his knees, checking his friend to ensure that he hadn’t splinched him in their abrupt departure. “we should get moving,” albus said, frowning as scorpius walked away from him, as the other tipped his head towards the sky, his blonde hair reminding albus of a halo. “scor? i’m sorry — i know i really fucked it for us,” he said, slowly getting to his feet, tongue darting out to lick blood off his lip. a twinge in his side told him his ribs had been brusied, but albus trudged on towards scorpius regardless, one arm folded around himself, fingers lightly pressing over the ache in his body. “what’re you — ” albus fell silent at the peaceful expression on the other’s face, and it was with parted lips and confusion that he looked towards the sky, the crisp air stinging his cheeks. not moments later, it began to snow, the flakes coming down in gentle flurries. the corner of albus’s mouth twitched up into the beginnings of a smile, a sparkle returning to the green hues. “scor, look, it’s snowing!” albus said, excitement exuding from his form as he rounded on his friend. but scorpius had known that, albus realized, he had felt it coming and he had waited for it to cleanse him from the bloodshed. his tongue was out to catch the flurries as they fell, crystals of varying size and shape dissolving the instant they hit. albus watched his friend in silent awe, admiring the way the flakes clung to his lashes, the way the snow began to wet his skin. his hands falling straight at his sides, albus shifted and mirrored scorpius, parting his lips to catch the flakes on his tongue, taking a moment of peace in the dark night.

"i don’t get the point of these watches,” albus murmured, stifling a yawn, his eyes tearing up faintly. he sniffled, wiping at the corners of his eyes with his gloved hands, hunkered down by a tree, a warming charm the only thing keeping him from shivering. “nobody even knows where our safe houses are. my dad just can’t help his own bloody paranoia,” he added, cupping his palms in front of his mouth and blowing, the warm air stinging his cheeks. the cold, despite the warming charm, was still beginning to bite at his skin, causing his nose and cheeks to grow pink and his lips to chap. “mum was right, i should’ve brought lip balm.” green eyes flitting around the field, albus was too distracted to notice the movement behind him until — splat! he blinked, the sudden cold beginning to seep into the back of his neck, dripping down his sweater. “what in merlin’s name — ” albus turned, his focus settling on scorpius and the wicked smirk on his face, the snowball in his gloved hand. “oh, you think you’re gonna one up me while my back is turned, huh?” albus challenged, digging into the snow by his feet as quickly as he could, rolling out of the way of scorpius’s next attempt at pelting him with the snow. “you don’t know what you’ve started, malfoy!” albus shouted with a laugh, rising to his feet, the snowball held aloft in his mitten-clad hand.

she was tired, she was dirty, she was crying, and she was just about ready to crawl under a table and hide. while they could make sure she couldn’t leave, if none of the death eaters saw her crawl under the table, they couldn’t get her out. for the first time since she had been captured, she wished she was in that cell in the basement once more. her eyes were scanning the floor to see if it was even a feasible idea when she heard a voice. she moved her head slowly, careful not to look directly at the person in front of her at first, she had quickly learned some death eaters didn’t like a blood traitor slave looking at them. her eyes fixated on the handkerchief, hesitant to take it from him when a name fell from the person’s lips and her eyes snapped up. it was just in time to catch the quick glimpse of his eyes, she recognized them in an instant. “a..” she stopped herself, partially because she realized it would a horrible idea to say his name in case someone ventured to close to check on her, and partially because her throat ached when she used her voice, since she hadn’t in what had to have been days. “thank you..” her voice was quiet when she responded, taking the handkerchief and wiping her eyes quickly and balling it up in her hands to hide it. “how..who..” her eyes left him and she fruitlessly scanned the room, she wouldn’t be able to recognize anyone without them giving something away first. but she wondered, who was here, how many of them were here, and would they be able to take her with them when they left?
he did not allow himself to smile at her acknowledgement; though they were being paid no mind, albus was still paranoid that someone would take note of their suspicious behavior. “don’t thank me,” he said simply, “it’s the least i could do.” he hadn’t known that this was where they had been keeping her. but, the more he thought on it, the more it made sense. that way they could parade her around, show her off in front of the others. her question gave him pause, his eyes focusing for a moment on the reflection his shoes were giving off. albus said nothing, flickering through the options. he could tell her their plans, get her involved, and maybe save her from what they were doing to her. but at what cost would information like that come? albus worried his bottom lip between his teeth, snagging a glass of champagne from one of the servers as they walked by. “something’s going to happen tonight,” he murmured lowly, the champagne glass near his lips, hiding their conversation. “you must be careful.” he took a sip of the champagne, the bubbly liquid tasting like ash on his tongue. he couldn’t enjoy a thing tonight; he was far too tense, too pressured. “it might be a good opportunity for you to escape,” he added in a low murmur, warily eyeing a passerby who seemed entirely too drunk to focus on any of the conversation to be had in the hall.

“It never works for us, and it never will.”
“I’m done. I’m done trying so hard only for you to never even look in my direction.”
“I can’t fall in love with you. I don’t want all the pain that comes with it.”
“My roommate had to go into my room and throw the sheets away because I haven’t been able to sleep in that bed since you left.”
“I keep asking myself “why isn’t the sun bright anymore” but then I remember you’re not in my life anymore and realize it’s just my own eyes.”
“I regret it all. I really do, I swear. Please, please– let’s fix this, please.”
“Remember when you promised we’d always be together? Because I remember when I thought you meant it.”
“I can’t move on from something that wasn’t supposed to end!”
“The phone calls aren’t the same… I can hear in your voice that it’s not the same anymore.”
“I’m trying to avoid talking because I know what it’ll lead to, and I don’t want that to come.”
“Don’t you think you can fall back in love with me?”
“This whole time I’ve been using you to make me feel better, and you never caught on. You never caught on. I want you to hate me now, but I don’t think you’re even able to.”
“Kissing me breaks the promise… remember?”
“Every time we fix things something else ends up breaking.”
“Why don’t we stop pretending we’re not on a road to destruction?”
“It wasn’t even fun at first, honestly. It was just like… Morphine.”
“You’re just not enough anymore.”
“It’s been too long since you’ve really smiled.”
“Ah, it was all my fault. Wasn’t it?”
“To think, we thought just the sex would be enough to keep us in love.”
“Back then, I lied when I told you I didn’t love you. You needed to move on from me– I needed to protect you from me.”
“You never had that shine in your eyes when you were with me.”
“Quit trying to fix me when you need to just fix yourself.”
“I’m so tired of everything about us, and about how we thought we were in love, and how we think forcing it can make us be in love– I’m so tired of it.”
“This whole time you’ve still been in love with him/her… Not me.”
“I couldn’t make you fall in love with me. I thought I could do it, I really did, but… But I know you… And this isn’t love.”
“Did you really think I needed that kiss back then when all that you conveyed in it was pity?”
“To think I’ve changed so much to get you to like me, and you still never really look my way.”
“I know I deserve better than you. I realize that, but you were so broken… I didn’t want to be the one that made you shatter.”
“All of this was to protect myself.”
“I feel like I’ve been looking for who you used to be… Back when you were actually happy.”
“I never want to even hear your name during my life anymore.”
“Your lips used to be sanctuary, but now I just feel trapped.”
“Isn’t it time we both stopped pretending we make each other happy?”
“The thing I regret the most is giving you so much hope by agreeing to this date.”
“We have the kind of history anyone would never want to think about again, and you’re hear asking me on a date?”
“What makes you think I’ll be any different this time?”
“I’ll let you down. I will always let you down. I’m not enough for you to be satisfied.”
“Are you satisfied with the mess you’ve created out of me?”
“I should have listened to everyone who told me this was a bad idea.”
“I’ve never met someone who can so gently destroy me the way you do.”
“I can’t forget about him/her! It’s not in my power to forget how he/she felt when they loved me.”
“The saddest thing is that when I told him/her I loved him/her, he/she thought I was lying. He/she never believed someone could fall in love with him/her.”
“Listen… You’re his/her best friend… and I completely fucked up– it’s over between us, but… please, punch me, or punish me, or do something to me because he/she just… cried. He/she wasn’t even angry, they were just so sad– Please, be angry at me, please. Give me what I deserve.”
“It would have been better if we never met.”
“You’re my regret.”
“I’m not angry at you, just at myself… Because I knew this would happen, but I let myself fall in love with you anyways.”
“Don’t tell me to give up like everything is meaningless.”
“This is why I don’t let myself fall in love.”
“Somewhere deep inside me, I still have hope that you’ll fall in love. How pathetic.”

—- alexander LIT UP when he realized that he was accompanied by a FRIEND again. feeling much LESS like he was drowning and much MORE like someone had thrown him a life preserver to swim with, his demeanor shifted slightly. it was only hardly visible, in the SLIGHT softening of his features, and how his death grip on the champagne flute lessened a fraction. “WELL, what else are we supposed to talk about? i really only know what’s happening in MY world, and that’s HARDLY relatable.” he sniffed, doing his best to be still VAGUE, just in case his senses were off, in case this WASN’T a friend he was talking to. not to mention the possibility that ANYONE could be listening to them right now, and he had to be careful with his words. “i dunno, i RECKON there’s a number of people who like to give me a hard time.” he pretended to be THOUGHTFUL, even though he knew that taunting tone like the back of his hand. “al. how’re you doing tonight, mate?”
“i believe this lot prefer to talk about the decor and how exquisitely decorated the manor is,” albus mused, sarcasm heavy in his words. he couldn’t deny it, though, that every inch of the place was beautiful — but albus knew what this place meant to scorpius, had known since they were young, and despite his own intrigue, he remained faintly concerned for his friend, wherever he may have been. he shot alexander a look at the nickname, but in this particular instance he knew he couldn’t protest. “i’ll get you back for that one later,” albus warned, grimacing faintly at the nickname. “sneak a couple of gnomes into your room, maybe,” he added under his breath, careful to be sure they wouldn’t be overheard. “i’m alright, i guess,” he lied, tongue tracing over his lips, tasting some essence of the champagne he had been sipping on. “this all feels strange, though. i know we fit in well, but i still feel out of place.” albus watched the people move around them, some schmoozing, others dancing. it was a whole other world here, complete with ice crystals and fancy drinks. “you couldn’t have picked a more noticeable color to wear, could you?” he said, a low snort of amusement escaping him, “you can be so subtle, know that?”
dphnlngbttm:
daphne got to attend the ball, but not how she would have liked. she didn’t get to put on a nice fancy gown, wear a beautiful glittering mask, or even get to dance. oh how she longed to dance, even if it was just with her father, in the kitchen of a safe house they were staying at, even if she only wore some old worn out socks and her usual clothes. she would give anything to go back to those days. but alas, she was here, at the masquerade ball, but she was just to be paraded around. the death eaters had been bragging apparently, and now they got to show the rest of the wizarding world that they held neville longbottom’s daughter captive and could do with her what they would like. she was thin to the point of being emaciated. they fed her yes, but not tons and she barely had the will to eat most days now. once her eyes had been full of light, and hope, and dreams of a better future, but now they were sunken and had no spark in them. they were now just dull blue things staring at seemingly nothing most of the time, just like now. they wanted her to serve drinks, but daphne had never been very graceful when she wasn’t dancing. it only took her a minute with the tray to trip (although perhaps it was that foot someone stuck in her way that did her in). the drinks were saved by a nearby wizard’s wand, but she was not so lucky. she hit the ground, hard, harder now that there was less to cushion her bones from it. while she was in no rush to stand, she was in a rush to get away from the foot that now poked at her, and as such, she scrambled to her feet and bee-lined to the nearest corner of the room. she couldn’t leave the party, the death eaters made sure of that, but she could hide out in a corner for a least a few minutes, or at least she hoped she could.
daphne. albus hadn’t seen her for ages, at least not since she had been taken. “alby!” he smiled faintly at the recollection of her sweetly calling him that once, and only once (for he had told her off quite viciously for it), but the smile soon faded as he took in the sorry state of her. she was thin, so thin that his grandma weasley would have stuffed her full of five types of potatoes and desserts by now, but albus knew he couldn’t whisk her away. she was stuck here alone, a lamb amongst a pack of hungry wolves. “wingardium leviosa!” he hissed, knowing seconds before she did that she was about to stumble; he had seen the wizard purposefully outstretch his foot, a nasty smirk on his lips. loathe as he was to stand there and watch, albus magicked the drinks back onto the platter, which was in the hands of a new servant. with a casual, sweeping look to ensure nobody was staring, albus slipped over to the corner she had rushed to. “that was unreasonably cruel, don’t you think?” he mumbled, producing a handkerchief from the breast pocket of his suit and offering it to her. “you know, daph, grandma weasley would have a right fit if she saw you,” he said, lifting his head a fraction, his green eyes catching the light of the room beneath his mask.
alcxanders:
—- alexander’s heart was RACING as he walked through the halls of malfoy manor. it felt W R O N G, everything about this felt out of place. they’d been running through EXTENSIVELY ever since news of the ball had caught wind in the order. they’d been practicing how to WALK, how to TALK, how to be boisterous enough to be accepted by the crowd they’d be immersed in, but not so much that they were suspicious. and, YET, alexander was TERRIFIED. what if he made a mistake? what if he did something that alerted all of the death eaters to his presence AND the rest of the order’s? it was so much PRESSURE. – DON’T MESS UP ALEXANDER, YOU CAN’T MESS THIS UP. – he had to remind himself to STAY CALM, to keep a level head, but he was starting to feel PANICKED, like he couldn’t BREATHE quite right. he just wanted to know where his friends were, wanted to be at the side of someone who WOULDN’T kill him when the night turned. but then he was approached by a stranger – OF COURSE, THEY’RE ALL STRANGERS. – and he made himself breathe. even if he WAS scared, he couldn’t show it now. he HAD to do this, he had to make the order PROUD. “beautiful winter we’re having, hm? all the snow?” he spoke, trying to make an easy small talk– HOPING he could recognize a friend by the way that they answered, the way they spoke and acted.
albus was leaning against one of the charmed walls, a glass of champagne in hand. he was lost in thought, his mind meandering through all of the repercussions of the night. should he forewarn the death eaters somehow? was that in his job description? he hadn’t made anything official, of course, but would tipping them off to something like this put him in more favorable standing? he felt the beginnings of a headache, and it was with a sigh that albus took another sip of the bubbly liquid. lost in thought as he was, albus missed the first half of what the other said to him, only catching the tail end. “sorry,” he murmured, tilting his head faintly, pointing towards his ear, “i didn’t quite catch that. something about the snow?” the longer he regarded the other, the more something about his outfit screamed familiarity. it struck him suddenly, a flash of lightning in an otherwise darkened night. albus chuckled, a broad grin stretching across his lips. “are you seriously walking around making smalltalk about the weather?” he had seen alexander for a brief instant while they were all readying themselves, though albus was unsure whether or not the other knew what he was wearing. “guess who,” albus challenged.
this world was a mystery to albus; the world of fine cutlery, of poise and grace and silver cufflinks and finely tailored clothing that cost thousands of galleons. his own clothes, which he had pilfered from one of the few remaining shops that tailored items for witches and wizards, were much the same. one hand in his pocket, albus meandered his way towards the gardens, the heat of the room stifling him, making him feel as though his collar was choking him. he breathed a sigh of relief as he stepped outdoors, met with cool air and a smaller crowd. the movement out here matched his pace, the flurries of snow falling leisurely and the temperature much more bearable. albus brushed his thumb beneath the edge of his MASK, the fine feathers tickling his skin. finally at ease, albus found himself heading towards the small market booths that were set up, his eyes going wide at the prices asked of the items available. most of them were antique artifacts worth more galleons than he had ever seen in his lifetime. he lingered at a pair of fine gloves, silver and silk to the touch. “merlin, i’d love a pair of these,” he mumbled. he was scarcely touching the fabric when the shopkeep snarled, “that’ll be fifty galleons, and don’t touch.” raising his nose a fraction in an attempt to be offended, albus curled his lip. “as if i would waste money on the likes of you,” he hissed, turning abruptly, the tails of his cloak swishing along after him as he continued away from the merchant, desperately hoping he hadn’t given anything away in his instant of yearning.
