I will always maintain that Wei Wuxian was in the right for what he did during the Sunshot Campaign. It is morally right and even necessary to resist violent oppression with violence. Any handwringing on how oppression is fought and what kind of violence fits the bar for “good enough to not be labeled a bad guy” in the face of fighting oppression is the same as siding with said oppression.

The fact that wwx only does what he does during wartime to the people trying to oppress him but drops these behaviors completely during peacetime says a lot about his character. Meanwhile, the wartime tactics the Wen used is what the rest of the cultivation world adopt during peacetime, wonder what that says about them 🤔

To continue this conversation, I do not believe that Wei Wuxian’s actions at the Nightless City murder party should be argued in terms of morality. Is it moral to react to an injustice happening to you? Is the reaction, itself, moral? That’s a conversation that leads nowhere. It feels like arguing the morality of eating when you’re hungry or flinching when someone flicks you, the morality of doing something to keep yourself safe and alive. (Note that wwx’s intentions towards the clans weren’t violent until he heard they were plotting a siege.)

However, I’d argue that his reaction was justified and defensible. People like to act like wwx just showed up and started killing people, “massacre” this, “mass murder” that, yet Nightless City did not end up like the first siege of the Burial Mounds, the fall of Lotus Pier, the massacre of either the Chang or the He clans, or the complete destruction of the Wen clan. Everyone who died directly lifted a weapon to kill wwx, but a substantially large portion of that group lived to see the siege followed through. But I’m expected to believe that people who gathered together to plan how to kill you and the ones under your protection should be given the benefit of the doubt and be treated with hospitality? No, you are completely justified in fighting them. It is completely defensible that you would fight someone plotting to kill you after they had just unsuccessfully plotted to ambush you to kill you. Is it moral or immoral to do so? Idk, but I do know it’s immoral to go back on your word and murder someone for power.

Take from this what you will.

I think it’s both equal parts amusing and frustrating how people write Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian’s relationship in fanfiction because they clearly know how Wei Wuxian acts with the people he loves-

He’s clingy, teasing, praises them often, generally thinks the world of them and constantly says as much, always keeps their comfort in mind, and whines to them constantly about things that don’t really bother him because he knows they will indulge him.

-And yet they somehow fail to notice, even while including all these things into their relationship in their story, how Wei Wuxian fails to demonstrate any of these same actions with Jiang Cheng in the novel.

I wouldn’t say Wei Wuxian doesn’t care about Jiang Cheng at all but how he treats Jiang Cheng can really not be compared to the way he treats Jiang Yanli or Lan Wangji.

That play whining he does with Jiang Yanli and Lan Wangji? He does that because he trusts them to indulge him and receive the comfort and affection he’s asking for. Wei Wuxian complains to Jiang Cheng plenty but I can’t recall a single moment in which Wei Wuxian went to Jiang Cheng for comfort, support, or displayed any kind of vulnerability to him on purpose.

There’s isn’t even really any friendly bickering or teasing between them in the novel. There’s Jiang Cheng criticizing Wei Wuxian and complaining and Wei Wuxian waving off his comments.

Even Wei Wuxian’s biggest show of care to Jiang Cheng, giving up his golden core, feels to me like it never would have happened if Wei Wuxian hadn’t been raised to feel indebted to the Jiang’s and like it was his responsibility to keep the sect going.

It’s just… jarring honestly.

#not fic wise in general #but I think it’s a good point #like I don’t think young WWX didn’t love JC I do think he has an attachment to him #but I don’t think he ever felt like he can be silly old him around him and receive reassurance like he did with JYL #who just shows up to give him unconditional love and care and wouldn’t dismiss him #JC just has a tendency to try to shut him down or say that he deserved it #and when it comes to joking silly complaints it isn’t that big of deal #it becomes a big deal when WWX brings up his valid complaints and concerns #like in the Lotus Pods extra when he is rightfully mentions that it’s unfair that YZY always targets him #wherever ppl are collectively doing smth she doesn’t like #making him a scapegoat who receives the punishment #and JC just dismisses it #like that would have been a good place to show a bit of brotherly empathy like ‘yeah dude it kinda sucks’#but he just doesn’t empathise #doesn’t validate WWX’s feelings in the slightest #when wwx actually validates JC’s feelings in a similar situation where yzy upsets JC in regards of JFM not loving him #like I don’t think JC (well young JC in particular) didn’t care about WWX at all #we are shown he was clearly worried about him after the punishment in CR and after WWX got hurt in the turtle cave #but emotional engagement wise and empathy wise I feel like their relationship always relied on #WWX playing a cushion to JC’s feelings while JC didn’t return the same sentiment #which is why I am not surprised that when it comes to second life #WWX doesn’t mention any nostalgia regarding whatever relationship he had with JC #while often returning to think about JYL with love #it’s my personal opinion but I think that WWX and JC’s relationship was kinda doomed to corrode at some point bc I think fundamentally #the theme of debt/classist expectations that JC unconsciously has bc he was raised in that system #would always make him expect WWX to adjust to approach and prioritise JC’s feelings and interests #which just can’t give you equal relationship #mb the difference is that JYL and 2nd life LWJ just allow WWX to be who he is #while JC allows him to be what the society expects him to be 🤔#anyway again spammed the tag but I just have a lot of thoughts

Hello, what did you like about the Persephone and Hades ship? You made a lot of fan art about it for years.

I think what I enjoy the is the complexity of it, you watch the show and it leaves you with a lot of things to think about 🤔 This is about the ship and Hadestown in general, it’s so rare that a piece of media makes you think about it for months straight and you still manage to discover more and more things to think about the characters, the story, the themes etc.

Regarding Hadesphone, idk they are just so messy! They clearly love each other but also, at the point we see them in the story, they can barely function together because they clearly cannot understand each other. And I love how you can feel in what little we see of them that this situation seems like a product of many years of doubts, conflicts and misunderstandings blowing up in their faces. I enjoy that both of them want to feel loved but their perception of what is important about showing this love is so different it escalates their conflict to almost a point of no return. Persephone wants Hades to be the man whose priority is just to love her, wait for her and trust her to come back to him. All she wants him is to be *him*, the man who begged for her hand. And Hades due to his doubts feels like the only way he can “earn” her love is to be a “manly man” and a provider, which distorts his view of what his wife wants from him (“Wife loves warmth? Let’s build a furnace! Wife loves light? Let’s make the whole underworld shine like neons”) and feeds his insecurity which eventually causes his mistrust in her. Which in turn violates Persephone’s autonomy, one thing she wants him to respect as a promise he made to her, to wait when she’ll return to him in her time. But at the same time they are so into each other they can’t imagine living without each other.

Idk they just feel so real? It’s just two people who love each other for so long they have already forgot why exactly they love each other. They are so caught in all the mess, they can’t seem to see the end of it until Orpheus’ song reminds them of what is important. I think when Hades produced that red flower in the end of Epic 3 it literally blew my mind and changed my brain chemistry forever.

All that aside, I also wanna say that my love for this ship is also due to Amber Gray and Patrick Page’s brilliant performance. I legit watched a ton of bootlegs with them to see all the little details in their acting. I think it’s even more impressive when you remember that the two have very little scenes together where they actually talk, so a lot in their characterisation relies on you watching how they interact in silent scenes! Which is such a joy on every rewatch. I’m honestly not sure whether I would have been so into that ship if I saw any other pair in the roles during my first watch bc their delivery is so *chief kiss*, so much nuance 👌Such a tasty characterisation, you can see that their work on the characters has been years in the making!

#I see the proshot reactivated the fandom 🤣#but honestly I feel like a great deal of all the nuance in these characters are due to Amber and Patrick crushing their performance #like I’ve seen a lot of bootlegs and even seem the show live at least 3 times #with different casts #and although a lot of them were great and provided a different take on the characters #I don’t think they’ve quite reached the high I got when I watched AmberPat perform in that first boot I’ve watched #like Amber Gray’s acting delivery of Persephone is just smth else #she is so vulnerable but rough around the edges #she is so funny and energetic yet so sad inside #she loves her Hades but also wants to slap the bastard #she is all in contrasts #also I do love that she plays her alcohol addiction as an addiction bc this is smth I found lacking in some other Persephones who #underplayed it and played it as just party girl things #I think it also adds to her humanity and to their conflict with Hades #ok I’m wrapping up singing praises to Amber Gray I’m very excited to see her in proshot #when it comes out on streaming #hadestown

something i adore about hadestown is that it still meant something, y'know what i mean? like okay, no orpheus's song did not convince hades to give up his empire. hades' love for persephone isn't enough to deconstruct the machine he's built and has convinced himself that he needs in order to protect what he has. but he let them go. he saw the love eurydice and orpheus had for one another and it convinced him to let them try. orpheus may have turned around but they still walked, they almost made it. doubt set it but they were right there. that's further than anyone else can say. nobody else had made it that far. who's to say someone else can't make it a few steps further? persephone is able to leave the underworld and go home again when she needs to. spring has come again, if we're lucky autumn just might too. will this change be permanent? we don't know. but it's something. it doesn't knock down the wall but it's one brick out of it. and that means something. it wasn't all for nothing. it's a crack in the wall. there's a reason we keep singing this old song.

Thank you! Honestly, idk, maybe. The probability rises with the release of the proshot but since they haven't announced it to be released on streaming and they are not showing it where I live, idk when will it happen. Unfortunately, the drawing subject depends on my current brainrot in 90% of the time, so unless the proshot reignites the brainrot I don't get a wish to draw ht rn xD But considering I'm very excited for the proshot there is a solid chance I'd want to sketch smth afterwards for the sake of good old days!
