One of the saddest parts about the mdzs fandom treating the great clans like harry potter houses that they need to stan or rival over is that a lot of intentional parallels in the story are obscured by this infantile view, particularly when it comes to the Jiang and Lan clans. Jiang Yanli and Lan Wangji are obvious parallels. Overtly. Undisputedly. But people who stan the Jiang will say that Lan Wangji “abandoned” Wei Wuxian in the latter’s first life in order to prop up the Jiang family on the back of Jiang Yanli’s sole supportive efforts, while Lan Clan stans will claim that Jiang Yanli “did nothing” for Wei Wuxian in the latter’s first life to justify Wei Wuxian “abandoning” the Jiang in his second for the Lan, also on the back of Lan Wangji’s sole supportive efforts (as if marrying into his husband’s clan is “abandonment;” as if Wei Wuxian was ever a Jiang at all).

Meanwhile, both of them stepped up to the plate for Wei Wuxian when they did not have to, when there was no benefit to them for doing so, when it looked bad for them to have done so, and asked for nothing in return. This was not the efforts of their clans; it was theirs alone. Their love alone.
