Britian's Only Standard Gauge Single Fairlie Locomotive.

This locomotive is a rather interesting specimen, but was rather short-lived. It's also one of my personal favourite locomotives from Britain. It was built in 1877 by R.W. Hawthorn as works No. 1699 with an 0-4-4 wheel configurated tank engine. It was also built to the Single Fairlie Patent, which had been a design of Robert Fairlie where the locomotive would have a front bogie that housed the driving wheels and cylinders. The engine is notable for being the first locomotive in Britain to be fitted with Walschaert’s valve gear, an innovation that would later see wide spread use in the country after the 1890s.

The engine was intended to be sent to France to be exhibited at the Paris Exhibition of 1878 by Fairlie himself, likely to demonstrate his patent and also the valve gear system. After it was exhibited, the engine was trailed on the Swindon, Marlborough and Andover Railway (I believe in around 1880?), where it became the first standard gauge Single Fairlie locomotive to run on a British railway. Satisfied with it, the railway bought the loco from Fairlie for £1000 and became their No. 4. Although the locomotive was good at handling tightly curved track, the engine wasn't too successful in other respects. The valve gear was poorly understood by the railway's engineers and a pain to maintain, as well as having a huge coal consumption. The locomotive was written off in 1889 after it was involved in an accident where it broke a spring at Marlborough station. The railway didn't have the financial needs to repair, nor did they have any need to, so it was sold for scrap in 1892.
