Why Bad Noise Is Harmful to Babies Loud, continuous and disruptive noise is "bad noise". Yet despite it's harmful effects, noise is embedded in our modern day
What is better - force your baby to "acclimmate" to loud noise, or do your best to provide him or her with peaceful, quiet surroundings?

Especially if you are pregnant, we recommend you skip soy derived ingredients in your skin care products. Fortunately, there are alternatives!
Why Should You Avoid Soy in Skin Products During Pregnancy? At Amalou Skin we talk a lot about not using face and body care products containing ingredients that could inadvertently expose your baby to contraindicated toxins (e.g. Accutane, benzoyl peroxide). Today we want to bring in another level of awareness – that which may not harm baby, but isn't doing your skin any favors either. Come check out our new blog post and learn WHY you need to avoid this ingredient in your skin products. Hint: exacerbates #melasma and causes some other issues as well.
Practicing prenatal yoga is proven by science to be awesome for your and your baby's wellbeing. Quick rundown of top 5 benefits and action steps to help you get started.

Grandmother Hypothesis attributes human longevity to the important role of grandmothers. However, the benefits are gender biased. Read more...

Human Evolution Attributed to Grandmother Hypothesis
Human Evolution Attributed to Grandmother Hypothesis
"Grandmother Hypothesis"Defined
The Grandmother Hypothesis is a collection of research which theorizes one reason women have a relatively long lifespan for the purpose of helping to care for grandchildren. Additional studies show a preference in the grandmother-grandchild gender relationship. [caption id="" align="alignleft" width="500"] (Credit)Graph 1: The Atlantic Magazine: "The Evolutionary Importance of Grandmothers"[/caption]
Apparently, maternal & paternal grandmas have different incentives when investing in their grandkids, because of genetic relatedness. In so doing, women can supposedly increase their genetic contribution after menopause by bonding with their grandchildren. Not surpisingly, the accuracy of the hypothesis is debated.
Leslie Knapp, a biological anthropologist, found that the grandma's positive influence varied by X-chromosome relatedness. Dr. Knapp and her team studied birth and death records from 7 various populations Europe, Asia,North America and Africa. By looking at child mortality rates during the 1st three years of life, they discovered results were not equivalent in boy and girl grandchildren.
Nepotism at it's Best (or Worse, as the Case May Be)
Here's the breakdown: maternal grandmothers are related to both their grandsons and granddaughters by 25% X-chromosome relatedness. On the flip side, paternal grandmothers are 50% X related to their granddaughters, and 0% X related to their grandsons.
Perhaps genetic relatedness has something to do with the level of incentive when investing in the futures of their grandchildren. The presence of the paternal grandmother in the 7 populations had a bad effect on grandsons, her presence linked even to a infant death rate increases. On the other hand, grandma's influence on paternal granddaughters was beneficial. Early studies did not delinieate based upon gender, which might explain the inconsistencies found.
What All of This Means About Grandmothers
This probably comes as no surprise to many of us: gram has a crucial role to play in society. The hypothesis is based on the relatedness of grandparents to grandchildren. However, the difference of relatedness between the sexes should not be ignored. To learn more about the implications, please visit us on the Amalou Skin blog.
Pregnancy Acne Treatments from the Pantry
Hey everyone! We just learned about four common pantry items that are also good to use for pregnancy acne treatments.
Sorry to say this but pregnancy acne is all too common...in fact, 50% of pregnant women experience it! Whether severe or mild, I think we can all agree it's a nuisance. The medical establishment has attributed acne breakouts during pregnancy to the gigantic spike in hormones a woman undergoes during her first trimester. The production of natural oils in the skin is thrown into overddrive as the hormones go bonkers. As they say, the best indication of whether a woman will get pregnancy acne is whether or not she's had a history of acne and other acne flares in her past.
The fact that you might get acne when pregnant can complicate things because using the beauty skin care products you used as a teen or even an adult with acne might contain ingredients that are not good for you or your baby while you're pregnant. So finding safe alternative methods is the key.
To find out what the top 4 pregnancy acne treatments from the pantry we recommend, you'll have to visit us on our blog at http://amalouskin.com/blog/pregnancy-acne-treatments/ Did we mention these treatments are cheap?! Your skin will thank you so hurry up and come learn the secrets!

Pregnant Women Want to Know: Are Products with Benzoyl Peroxide Harmful for Baby?
With all the latest press around environmental toxins, pregnant women are becoming more cautious about selecting products that do not pose a threat to themselves or their developing baby.
One such inquiry concerns the ingredient benzoyl peroxide. Questions like “is benzoyl peroxide safe during pregnancy”; is a common inquiry.
If your skin is experiencing breakouts, blemishes and discolorations all of the sudden, first of all know that you are not alone. Roughly 50% of all new moms-to-be experience complexion issues during and after pregnancy.
Secondly, while no evidence exists that using skin products containing benzoyl peroxide while pregnant is of no particular threat, there also have not been any human studies conducted that analyze actual effects. It may be safe, as the medical establishment claims, on the merit of its path from absorption to elimination in the human body. However, there are other ingredients found in skin care products that you should stay away from like the plague.
We made a list on our blog -- please come stop by for a visit and discover the 6 harmful skin care ingredients you should avoid even if you have acne during pregnacy.
WARNING: Being human, we humbly believe that you (and we), will epically fail at some or all of these "states of being" many, many times-- keep trying anyway.
We saw this article: We do not believe it is humanly possible to accomplish all of these "states of being" all day, every day- however we think it is worth striving for. And we definitely believe it is worth imparting this wisdom-of-self on to your unborn child, as an excellent bar to continually strive for. So here it is:

If You Are Not Doing This, You Should Be.
Skin Brushing!
The skin is the largest organ in the body, and is responsible for a quarter of the body’s daily detoxification. Dry skin brushing helps eliminate toxins that build up in your lymphatic system. A bonus is that skin brushing makes your skin look and feel more vibrant and elastic.
Dry skin brushing over your body is a good way to increase circulation, boost your immune system and eliminate fat deposits. It also improves circulation and unclogs pores, which allows your oil glands to release more oil (think natural moisturizer).
Before showering, use a dry, natural bristle brush on dry skin. Use long, gentle, sweeping strokes - always moving towards your heart. Start at the soles of your feet, moving to the top of your feet then up your calves, knees and upper legs. From your belly button, move up around your breasts and to the center of your chest. Brush up your back towards your shoulders and up your arms towards your shoulders. Brush down your neck toward your heart and shoulders. This is roughly the direction your lymphatic system flows in your body.
Enjoy!

Still Fighting Winter Blues?
Here are some tips to combat the Winter Blues that unfortunately, many of us in the Northeast are still facing:
1. Get Sunshine: Bundle up and go for a walk outside. This will also get you out in nature which is a good thing. You can start to see that some tree buds are fighting their way through, some grass patches are starting to show, and Spring is just around the corner.
2. Get Moving: Join a new exercise class like prenatal yoga or just follow step number one.
3. Get in Groups: Isolation can be depressing. Make an effort to meet up with some friends for tea at Starbucks or brunch or just pick up the phone and call someone.
4. Get your Omega On: Omega-3 fatty acids may help combat depression per this article in Fit Pregnancy Magazine: http://www.fitpregnancy.com/pregnancy/pregnancy-health/how-fight-winter-blues-during-pregnancy
