This is Breonna Taylor. I hope you don’t need me to tell you her name.

I originally drew this portrait for the “Birthday for Breonna” project. Started by someone on social media and I believe it was endorsed by her family. It was intended to flood the internet and KY legislature with a reminder of her birthday, June 5. To move the hearts of those in power to pursue justice for Breonna.

Today, my heart is heavy. One of the police officers that fired on her was charged, not with anything relating to her, but with “wanton endangerment”, meaning that he endangered her neighbors while firing into Breonna’s apartment, cutting short her precious life.

What does it say about a government that would rather give her family $12M in settlement and prepare for possible violent protest, rather than say to the world, every citizen is afforded equal protection under the law? The fact that they’re preparing for riots tells me that they know deep down inside that their decision is wrong. I don’t blame her family for taking the settlement, but I know from personal experience the feeling of, no amount of money will bring your loved one back.

Breonna Taylor is our sister. Our friend. She could be any one of us.

I hope her soul rests in peace.
