“you’re funny.” oscar remarked. his attire was the complete opposite of the other - dress shirt, well-ironed slacks, polished shoes. he knew his dad would get onto him for being more concerned about his looks than how he cooks, but old habits die hard. the city life sucked the small town instincts he had. apparently, also his small town instinct of not staring either. “you’re cute, but that’s not always why people would stare.”

“i try. but i paid good money for how i look, i like to be admired.” amaryllis purred, flashing a cocky grin towards the stranger. “as long as nobody’s tryn’a fight, whatever. and you ain’t so bad y’self.” he added, tilting his chin up slightly.

“what are you lookin’ at--? you better be starin’ at me ‘cause you think i’m cute.” amaryllis huffed, looking over at the person near him. they probably weren’t even staring. he was just in a mood. he was still in his work clothes, dirt and sawdust-covered khaki overalls and a bright orange reflective shirt, and big, half-assed wiped clean, muddy workboots.
