Oh…I would pettily LOVE IT if some writer had Cessily just tell Laura- “Well I know you just studied with me and shared a room with Sooyara. None of us you’d really “call friends”, right?”… before launching into how Pixie, Dust, Surge, and Velocidad told her what Laura said while Laura was with the Avengers Academy and basically just give Cess a “Facebook” movie moment where she tells Laura that it’s not that people don’t want to be friends with her, it’s that she treats them like shit!
Noriko I think initially didn’t care for Laura because she was close with Julian/ Laura obviously had a crush on Julian… just like Noriko doesn’t interact or was close with any of the other Hellions. Dust is probably the only one she’s on somewhat good terms with, until she became closer to Julian. But even in KYOST- Prodigy and Elixir are the only characters she really initially interacts with.
I definitely do agree that Laura has struggled emotionally and been horribly abused and I am not even blaming Laura, so much as saying it’s an interesting plot point? (And kind of joking about it! lol!)
It’s kind of like my comment on Peter Parker a few weeks ago- Peter is interesting because while YES! He definitely was bullied…there was also some arrogance to Peter in the Ditko books that made Peter unapproachable and Peter often pushed people away before even giving them a chance.
That’s the problem I think with modern readers- characters can’t be flawed in any way, or fans will get upset!
It’s kind of like Finesse and Laura’s friendship ending in Avengers Academy or Reptil moving on from his relationship with Finesse after feeling strung along… that was interesting!
Jeanne is definitely sympathetic… but it’s also really interesting to watch her screw up!
A character can still be sympathetic… you can still understand WHY they did what they did… but they can also still be wrong.
Hellion is another example- do I understand why he blew up at Laura and called her “an unfeeling robot” because his feelings were hurt? Yes, but I can also agree that it was wrong and really cruel to say!
I think the problem now is- if any character does anything wrong… it’s instantly attacked (or with Laura, her fans just scream that she’s a saint that has never done anything wrong and everyone else is to blame!)
It was kind of like the Sophie/Prodigy moment in NYX- I think the writers kind of did something with it in the “Prodigy issue” (Prodigy’s monologue where he talks about everyone assuming he just uses his powers to get ahead!) and they said it would be addressed later (but the book got cancelled!)… but fans are still largely upset about it and use it as some gotcha that the writers believed what Sophie said… instead of it being them simply showcasing that Sophie has some biases. That she’s saying a LOT… despite being dead for a couple years and without seeing what life was like for the living X-Men.
It sucks, because I actually like characters having flaws and screwing up… and I think at some point everyone has been objectively not the “best friend they could be”… but I doubt it’ll ever be canonically addressed. ☹️
