Ukraine Seeks Application For EU Membership In 2020

Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko announced his intent to move Ukraine further away from Russian influence and signaled plans to apply for EU membership in 6 years time after implementing a series of necessary economic and political reforms (part of the “Strategy 2020” plan). Those reforms have to be deep-rooted in order to overcome years of inefficient and corrupt governance by the Yanukovych government to make the country eligible for a possible EU membership.

In the recent month Ukraine already has taken steps to forge stronger ties with Europe (economic association agreement between EU and Ukraine), despite of fierce opposition from Russia, which doesn’t want to see the former Soviet republic slowly slipping out of its sphere of influence. Until now no prospects have been made by neither the 28-nation EU nor NATO to offer membership to Kiev.

Meanwhile, a ceasefire in the conflict between the Ukrainian military and pro-Russian separatists in Eastern Ukraine appears to be holding as NATO officials reported a withdrawal of large numbers of Russian troops from Ukraine to locations near the border. According to the United Nations over 3,500 people have been killed in the conflict since fighting broke out earlier this year.
