“No problem!” Kim said standing back up. “Do you need anything else?”
She shook her head. “Nope.”
Kim grabbed a pony one, walked over to Amber and couched down so she was at the little girls eye level. She held out the band-aid and said, “Here you go, do you need any help?”
Amber smiled and took the bandaid. “No, I can do it,” she said. She opened the bandaid and wrapped it around her finger, smiling even though it was crooked. “Thank you.”
“Yikes, okay well go wash it out first and then we can put the band-aid on it. Would you like a heart print band-aid or a pony one?” Kim said with a smile. She remembered Amber from a while back when she had first come to Serenity. She was the first patient she felt she actually helped so she had a soft spot for this little one.
“A pony one,” she said.
“Sure sweetie.” Kim said shuffling through first aid stuff. “Did you scrape yourself?”
“Yeah. I got my finger caught in my dresser drawer and pulled it out fast. I’m bleeding.”
“It happens sometimes. It just means more of a reason to buy fun band aids. So, now that you’re all band-aided up, are you headed to the dance m’lady?”
Amber shook her head. “No... No one asked me to go and I dunno how to dance with other people, just by myself.”
“You are very welcome!” Lee replied with a smile before shaking his head. “Sometimes that’s true but then sometimes it just happens. I was the kid who, no matter how careful he was, would end up with all kinds of cuts and bruises. Part of it is just that kids get hurt and it happens.”
“That’s how I am. I get hurt no matter what I’m doing.”
“Alrighty then!” Lee replied as he put his backpack down and pulled out a band aid. “There we go.” He added as he quickly wrapped it around the girl’s finger. “I understand that, I used to be so clumsy as a kid. My mom would make me carry band aids with me all the time.”
Amber smiled. “Thank you. My mom always told me if I wasn’t doing something dumb I wouldn’t get hurt, but sometimes you get hurt when you don’t do anything dumb.”
“Of course I do! A boy scout is always prepared. Come here, what finger was it?”
“This one,” she said, holding her index finger up. “I’m always hurting myself.”
“Do you got a bandaid? I hurt my finger.”
“That makes sense. Are there specific things that you can’t seem to get out, or are they different things?”
“Different things. It depends on if I’m upset or not too. Or excited. Most of the time it’s cause I’m upset, sometimes it’s cause I’m excited, but sometimes it’s just cause I can’t use my words.”
Sebastian writes down the name. “I’ll look into it. That’s good.” He smiled. “One was my cousin. She was pretty cool though before she had the baby. Paige is very nice. Maybe, but I doubt that will all that goes into it, she won’t be all the time.”
“I like Eden. I think my mommy would be super nice like her,” she said. “Yeah, but she’s usually nice so she won’t be mean all the time if she has a baby.”
“You can get an appointment. Who’s your therapist?” Sebastian asked. “I do, I do, it’s my job. I dunno, little one. I’ve been around a few pregnant women before, and none of them made me feel like I wanted to live with one.” He teased.
“Miss Eden. She’s really nice, I like her,” she said. “Yeah but maybe those women were just mean before they had the babies in their bellies. You said Paige is nice, maybe she’ll be nice if she has a baby in her belly. Is she still nice?”
“I’ll make you a deal, munchkin. If you go to therapy and do all your work nice and neat for a week, you can go outside.” Sebastian said. “But they poop and cry a lot. And they’re expensive. I can’t just have a baby because their cute, silly. What would make me a good daddy, Amber?” He asked.
“I haven’t been called into therapy, how can I go if I don’t get called in?” she asked. “Well, you’re nice and you make sure I’m okay when I get hurt and you don’t let me do stuff that’ll get me hurt and you protect me, so you’ll do the same thing for a baby too.”
“And what is this rule you have, princess?” Sebastian raised an eyebrow. “I would! Well thank you.” Sebastian smiled. “A baby? I don’t plan on having babies anytime soon.” He chuckled awkwardly.
“It’s a really awesome rule, and it’s called ‘Amber gets to go outside whenever she wants to do gymnastics cause she can’t do the inside’. And I’ve been good about that too, I haven’t been doing them inside since last time,” she said. “Well, you should have one cause babies are cute and you’d be a good daddy.”
“Do you know if you tend to write more than you talk, or maybe talk more than you write?”
“I talk more cause it’s only sometimes I don’t wanna talk. But when I can’t talk, I write more. Sometimes I can talk and just don’t want to and then the other times I can’t talk cause I can’t get anything out right.”
“The rules are the rules, love bug.” He ticked her. “You’ve gotta keep your hands to yourself, even in the real world.”
“Can I make rules? I have a really good rule to make, but you probably won’t like it.” Amber laughed when he tickled her and crossed her arms. “You’d be a good daddy. When are you gonna have a baby?”
Amber shook her head. “I wasn’t accusing you of stealing it, I just wanted to know if you seen it around the room anywhere and moved it. You can’t really steal something from your roommate unless you take it with you when you change rooms,” she said. “Yeah, that’s the first place I looked. It has to be there somewhere though cause I didn’t take it out of the room and if you didn’t then it’s still in there.”
Kay smiled. “Okay maybe I could help you look. To be honest I actually liked that night light. Are you sure you didn’t accidentally kick it somewhere whilst you were walking around?”
Amber shrugged. "I dunno. Maybe. I'm all over the place so I don't notice if I kick something unless it hurts. Like hitting my toes on the corner of my bed. That makes me cry," she said. "Could be under some clothes or something. I was looking for a short this morning and didn't put my clothes back in to my drawer."
