Well, I finally accepted the need for a tumblr... I go by Lilly, and I'm pretty friendly. I have a lot of varied interests, including fantasy, science fiction, Sailor Moon, reading, fanfiction for many varied fandoms, and fanart for just about anything. I may take a while to respond, but I'm happy to talk. Welcome!

Same Prompt Party: March 2021

Prompt: Rei Hino “Like a Lion”

When you strip her down to her soul, Rei has always had the heart of a lion.

Art notes: I had so many ideas for this prompt, it was hard to narrow it down.  When I went looking for inspiration images, even more ideas just exploded from there.  (Apparently, merging lions and fire is a popular concept.)  I wanted to depict Rei, with a lion roaring in the outline of her hair.  Possibly surrounded by flames.  One thing for sure, I couldn't wait until the last day like I did for the past two months.  LOL

After multiple test/sketching sessions, I narrowed it down to an outline of Rei with a fire lion emblem on her heart.  She has the heart of a lion, and you can't strip fire away from Rei Hino, even if she was never Sailor Mars.  In the final sketches of this one, I had thought to color her hair in all the colors of flame.  However, once I finished painting the lion, I decided that it would detract from the idea.  Sometimes, the artwork itself will tell you when it's done.

I used the following images for heavy reference (but I didn't end up tracing anything for the final painting, which I was proud of):

The acceptance letter stared at her accusingly from the surface of her desk, the solid wooden desk gifted to her by her father.  The deadline is rushing up on her, and her mother is waiting for her decision.  Of course she had won the full scholarship, all expenses paid.  Why not accept it a year early and head off to Germany?

The prompt was “Love and other 4 letter words” so I went with Love vs. Duty.  Ami did as her mother urged and applied early for medical school.  She was accepted, of course, so now she has a decision to make.

Art notes: I did at least 5 washes of watercolor to get that rich, wooden brown color of the desktop.  And I pulled out my gold shimmery watercolor again for Ami’s henshin pen.  (I love the fact that in the manga, you can actually write with these early versions of the pens.)  My edges for the two pieces of paper aren’t perfect, but I actually like how it turned out.  It makes it look like Ami has carried them around, worried the pages a bit in her pocket, brought it out at night to stare at it and worry… so I’ll take the end result happily.

this is so wonderfully executed: the logical template of a neatly-penned pros and cons list containing and contrasting the tempest of uncertainty and emotion surrounding her decision. it’s also interesting to see how the girls (and luna!) are listed as themselves as opposed to their senshi forms; how a possible duty to her teammates is held separate from her love for her friends. gives me a lot to think about, and i thank you for it!

Oh, wow, thank you so much for the compliments!  I do like to try and dig a bit into Ami, since I think she isn’t as well developed character-wise in the anime.  And I appreciate the comment on the desktop, it took quite a while to get it to look like that.  <3

Thanks @sittingoverheredreaming - I’m happy that the character work for Ami helps tell her story.  I think she may be a bit conflicted over the fighting aspect, but love having the friends.

One of my goals for 2021 is to use my watercolors more often.  So I decided that @docholligay‘s Same Prompt Party this year was a good place to start out.

This is a Sailor Moon fanart, for the January 2021 prompt of “Usagi Tsukino / New Year’s Fireworks”.  I went very literal on this interpretation.

Scenario: Ami gifted Usagi a fancy new polaroid camera, with the challenge of writing some of her photo captions in English.  Usagi loves the camera, and took a photo of her New Year’s celebration with Mamoru.

Art notes: I tried a new (to me) technique for watercolor resist painting, to get the colors of the fireworks to come through.  And after I was done, it was not sparkly enough, so I pulled out my shimmering silver/gold watercolors and accented the fireworks even more.  The second photo is a close up where the shimmer is showing up.  I’m happy with how it turned out and enjoyed painting it.

Also, I would like to improve my camera skills so that I can get better pictures to post.

what an absolutely STELLAR concept, and a killer execution, to boot! i can practically hear this picture, and it really tells a story. i think you could develop this idea into a terrific series!

SORRY REI I JUST HAD A BABY--Same Prompt Party --March

Hello my little postnatal vitamins! YOu thought I wouldn’t do it this month, but here I am! Albeit late, but let’s be honest, none of you (except lightdancer) were going to turn these in until the last minute anyhow, SO WE’RE GOOD

Ami and Rei got slightly screwed by Jewlet’s birth for time, but I have NOT abandoned them. 

This month’s prompt is: 

Rei Hino, “Like a Lion” 

Take that however you will, but DO take it! 

Rules:

Fics, art, whatever always welcomed and encouraged. We’ve had poetry, songs, etc. Only rule is it has to be original work, so manga colorings, gifsets, etc, don’t count.

Has to use the prompt in some reasonable way and heavily follow/feature the senshi of the month. (The senshi of the month is the senshi of the month, and not the SilMil version of them, Princess Serenity, Sailor Uranus, etc.. This seems like a weird clarification but please trust I have a reason)

I commit to reading all of these so I ask they not be longer than 5,000 words.

Sugar by @incorrecttact – This one made me laugh so hard, the entire construct of the language lesson is perfect and hilarious and it’s one of those things where you see the punchline coming but it matters NOT AT ALL. Delightful. 

Four Letter Words by @jay-lea– I love a good first person fic and I find they are so much more difficult than 3rd person. Standout line: That bit about ENOJYING or PREFERRING something, I love playing with exactitude of meaning like that. 

Thunder and Ice by @lightdancer1 — This is an extremely sweet Mako/AMi joint, and I love the idea of barely being able to pinpoint the moment, because isn’t that so true, with our loves?

Well, today is the day when I get caught up on reblogging the Same Prompt Party posts as well as replying to people who have commented on my posts.  I’m a bit new to this so I apologize in advance if the posts come out looking weird.  I’m really loving this Same Prompt Party project.

Hello my tiny little butter cookies, pressed into crumbly shapes of delight! I was so pleased with last month’s party, and I hope you’re all making an effort to read and look at everyone’s stuff! 

This month, for February and everything it contains, we have our senshi and prompt as:

Same Prompt Party!!

Hello my delectable little scones, with lashings of butter and jam, and hasn’t it been a MILLION YEARS since I did the legwork of putting together a same prompt party!? his year, I wanted to do something to inspire all our creativity, bring creativity back to tumblr, and try to make this year a slightly brighter one. 

So to that end, I am bringing back the Same Prompt Parties, and we will actually be doing a DIFFERENT senshi or pairing every month, versus all Harumichi!
