I kept saying why is he wearing this it was 88 F at 8:30pm lol
Of course I was there tonight in my hometown of Philly. I wasn’t close, but I was there.❤️
Y’all are interesting with your lyric interpretations for the Car. I think sometimes we take Alex too seriously. I also find him to be slightly out of touch with reality; he’s been famous most of his life. That said, the car is just loosely about a holiday he took. Sometimes he keeps meaning simple, you just have to look through the metaphors.
“We certainly managed to convince ourselves that it was appropriate to put [strings] on the record this time. I think it started off probably with an idea in “Mirrorball” and then, you know, I think… there’s some… yeah — it seemed… then when we looked for other places it seemed, you know, like there was a chance to maybe bring this string sound out sometimes and then have it step into th— out of focus again.” +

Mr. Schwartz from kings theatre is unmatched
This album is incredible.
For a master of deception and subterfuge You’ve made yourself quite the bed, to lie in Do your time traveling through the tanning booth So you don’t let the sun catch you crying
Arctic Monkeys - Body Paint
when i think about them titling the album “the car” and how body paint can also refer to a car’s body and how on the song he says “my teeth are beating and my knees are weak, there must be something up with the wiring” likening himself to a machine with faulty wiring and how the video has him displayed on a rotating platform like a new car at a showcase and how it all ties into the commodification of art and presenting himself as a product for consumption and—
Alex has always been good at a concept album
Walked in from a 12 hour day at work and fiance says “sit down the monkeys song is out” ??? I love him

Alex Turner performing Only You Know by Dion at Zach Dawes’ Wedding
Lou Reed was a student of Del Schwartz’s at one time. Reed wrote a velvet underground song dedicated to Schwartz. Alex is most definitely pulling Mr. Schwartz from probably a similar place. I think the song is drawing inspiration from the Velvet Underground and Del Schwartz as an author.
I also feel the lyrics stem from a place of Alex or a character having to perform. Wardrobe’s lint rolling your suit, putting leather softener on your shoes, getting ready for a debut… all of it sounds as though the character (or Alex) is debuting himself to an audience. Which he is, in a different sense, as a director.

Mirror ball stresses me out because I consistently think the first verse he’s talking to himself. “Don’t get emotional that ain’t like you” - Alex to himself. But then the chorus/second verse he’s talking to someone. I also wonder if “there’d better be a mirror ball” is more of a throw away line like don’t sit down… is it just a line he wanted to work with? Is it a line he felt? Is it both?
