Completely out-of-left-field post for this account, but I felt like sharing this somewhere I suppose. Mild spoilers for Backrooms (2026), but it mostly ended up being a personal vent.
The discussion of racism in the Backrooms, and honestly anything that doesnāt centralize around race, makes me want to not be black.
After checking the tag once, I was made aware of the movieās controversies that are apparently in high discussion right now. Now I can say, having done some digging into it, I wish black people could be more than their race. Every rant about the racism in Backrooms makes me wish black characters could just do things without needing justification the way a white character could. I wish black characters could be fucked up without adhering to what is expected of them. I wish black characters could be scary like this without being target of intense scrutiny for āperpetuating harmful stereotypesā.
Cannibalistic natures are awful stereotypes used against black people throughout history, and so Clark canāt eat the still lifes, because thatās racist, okay. Black men being aggressive and abusive is a harmful stereotype, so Clark canāt be either of those things, got it. Clark also canāt have a monstrous version of himself with an uncanny appearance, because said appearance is reminiscent of racist caricatures, cool. So what can he do? Well, he could be white!
Real comment that was supposedly meant to be against the movieās racism. Iām so tired. If I wanted to be an actor, would I have to put my race first? Would I be turned down because of my race āadding racist subtext to the narrativeā? Would the script be rewritten to fit my race? Why canāt I do what you can do?
