The dying star that fell to earth
The Unquiet Grave is an interactive fiction game where you take on the role of Catherine Earnshaw from Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights. With a customizable appearance, name, gender, and personality, take on the challenges of life for a young child on the lonely moors as you grow to adulthood. Navigate relationships with the your friends and family, and forge your own path through life – and death.
The game covers the section of the novel until the original Cathy's death, as well as parts of her potential afterlife. Whether your protagonist meets the same fate, or defies the stars and society in making a different choice, only you can decide.
The Unquiet Grave is intended to be a fairly short game, with the current build featuring around 10% of the planned narrative per playthrough as it is now. I will in the future be developing new, longer, and more complex games, so please keep an eye out for those!
The game is still being developed, so I would deeply appreciate any feedback you have to give! It was created in Twine 2 and is hosted on itch.io. Please send feedback and bug reports to either the ask box here or the comment section on itch.io. Thank you for playing!
Features:
A customizable protagonist: choose your first name, appearance, and gender identity.
Please note that due to story limitations, your protagonist must be AFAB. However, you may choose to be nonbinary or trans, out or closeted.
Your last name is locked to the "Earnshaw" of the original, though this name may change with your later choices.
Romance one of three options: Heathcliff, Edgar Linton, or Isabella Linton.
These characters will also have possible friendship-based routes.
Choose your protagonist's fate: follow in the original Cathy's footsteps, or pick a new direction across the windy moors.
Play the game!
Last update: May 11, 2021
Build is currently at around 7000 words.
I needed this literally two hours earlier, so I sat and did research and stuff and then the first thing that comes up on my feed I swear to god
but its here so that you can use it, yes, you, go forth with this knowledge
Ruin and Rising, Leigh Bardugo
I think a surprising amount of writers don’t realize that tragedies are supposed to be cathartic. They’re intended to result in a purging of emotion, a luxurious cry; the sorrow caused by a great tragedy is akin to fear caused by a good horror movie – it’s a “safe” sorrow, one that is actually satisfying to the audience. It can still be beautiful! It’s isn’t supposed to just be salting the earth so nothing can grow.
But that’s how you get grimdark: writers who don’t realize that they’re supposed to be doing something with the audience instead of to the audience.
#i once heard a lecture where someone said that the great appeal of tragedy is to see terrible things happen to people you’re supposed to#empathize with and see yourself in#and that the catharsis comes from seeing someone’s life go horribly wrong and still have the author hold your hand and tell you#‘this story mattered. even though it had a sad ending it still mattered. even if you don’t succeed your attempts matter’#grimdark tells you that the world sucks and nothing you do matters#well-written tragedy tells you that sometimes the world sucks but everything you do matters so so much#your story is still worth telling even if you never achieve that happy ending#or if you lose it along the way#people have inherent value and their stories deserve to be told no matter if they turn out okay or not#and in a reality that has no concept of ‘fair’ that shit just hits good man!!! feels good!!!!! it’s COMFORTING
Things with no gay/queer rep can be progressive and groundbreaking actually and need to be part of the discussion of representation in media
Like,,,,
A show about an interracial disabled couple (that’s written well) is just as progressive as a show about two gay characters
A show with multiple well written POC characters, especially in leading roles, is progressive and should be part of the discussion
Representation has never only meant queer rep.
And I hate that so many of POC and disabled people see that shows and books that represent them, not get included or acknowledge in the discussion about representation.
Just because something doesn’t represent you, doesn’t mean it’s not representing someone else.
Yes queer rep is good, of course it is (I’m neither cis nor het) but I can not begin to understand how so many of you will just,,,ignore shows that represent POC and/or disabled people in a well written and positive way because it’s not what you are. Or tell us that when we mention them as good examples of rep that it’s not really representation.
The world exist outside of you and your experience.
Evil biology facts that fill me with Fear :)
hey, I heard y’all like evil biology facts like knowledge about horse blood types.
well! today I was researching alternative biochemistries extraterrestrial life could use and. man. I think Earth life is fucked up enough for me thanks
biological dark matter. WHAT DO YOU MEAN MY BLOOD HAS DNA IN IT FROM NO KNOWN SOURCE. YOU CAN’T JUST SAY THAT COME BACK HERE
One specific cave that has been sealed for 5.5 million years and has developed an ecosystem completely dependent on chemosynthetic bacteria.
Was anybody going to tell me that bacteria have decided iron is yummy and are eating the Titanic, or was I supposed to just read that myself
Terrible Berry (yes, that’s what the genus name means). This whole thing is so fucked up. These scientists were testing whether radiation could be used to kill pathogens in food, so they dosed a tin of meat with enough radiation to kill any known living organism (as one does) but guess what, it still fucking spoiled because of THIS BASTARD FUCKER.
(seriously, why is it like this? WHY has a bacterium evolved to chill in radioactive waste like it’s a soothing Jacuzzi tub? What does it know that we don’t know?)
(ANSWERS. I WANT ANSWERS, YOU CHERNOBYL ASS BITCH.)
Cursed worm, which has no mouth or digestive system and depends entirely on five (5) different species of bacteria, which consume hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen monoxide, and carbon monoxide, for food. How do you, a worm, even...figure out how to do...all that?
Bone worms. At least they like their bones already dead. I still could have gone without knowing this was a thing.
“Oh, parasitic plant, that sounds c—WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING”
I am like half convinced this is made up. Seriously, bacteria grow their own electrical wires and we just let them?
To clarify
Evil (affectionate and admiring)
They took the unkillable bacterium and put a Disney song inside of it.
“In 2003, U.S. scientists demonstrated D. radiodurans could be used as a means of information storage that might survive a nuclear catastrophe. They translated the song "It's a Small World" into a series of DNA segments 150 base pairs long, inserted these into the bacteria, and were able to retrieve them without errors 100 bacterial generations later.”

☀️ June IFWriMo ☀️
Hello everyone!
I don’t know if you remember, but last January we did a little event in the spirit of NaNoWriMo called IFWriMo and mentioned doing another one in June or July (here’s Parker’s original post). So this is it!
✨ What is IFWriMo? It stands for Interactive Fiction Writing Month, and yes, we have two of them because we’re greedy like that (but mostly, that makes an event in summer and winter for people in both hemispheres, so you can choose what’s more convenient to you or do both). For a month, IF writers who want to participate set a goal for themselves and support each other while trying to reach that goal. ❤️
🌙 How do I set a goal? However you want! You can announce it on tumblr, set a word count goal on the NaNoWriMo website or keep it to yourself (we know it can be stressful to announce your goal to the world). The goal can be anything you want: a specific word count, finishing a branch or a chapter, writing for a set amount of time, etc.
☀️ Who can participate? Anyone who writes interactive fiction! Whether it’s visual novels or text-based adventures, whatever coding language you use!
This event is really meant as a way for writers to support each other. This is not so much a challenge as it is an excuse for us to hype each other up to write. ❤️
That’s it for now, see you in June for this second edition of IFWriMo! 💫
when bjork said “you’ll be given love, you’ll be taken care of. maybe not from the sources you’ve poured yours. maybe not from the direction you are staring at. twist your head around. it’s all around u” SHE WAS RIGHT!!!!!!
its a bitterly cold night and the light at the castle is on.

Working women by Alexander Samokhvalov (USSR, 1920s-1930s)
Remember, you will always be growing as a writer. There is no peak, only improvement. It’s a continual learning curve and you can only go up from here. So keep writing lovelies.
What's a TIRF?
Trans-Inclusive Radical Feminist, a TERF with different window dressing. They still share a lot of things in common, like the belief that a women-only space will be free of oppression or abuse. (Sorry, gonna soapbox a bit here)
Where a TERF believes it’s growing up with a penis and testosterone that makes someone fundamentally harmful and destructive, a TIRF believes it’s their masculinity. So TERFs exclude trans women but want trans men back as their “lost lesbian sisters”, and TIRFs accept trans women who have rejected masculinity sufficiently, but see trans men as the worst kind of traitor. Both varieties of radical feminist still believe men, however they define them, are fundamentally bad and oppressive, and cannot ever interact with or be in relationships with women without harming them.
Both groups, in my mind, fail to realize that women are just as capable of cruelty and evil as men are, and what makes a space safe is not its demographic makeup but the way its members agree to treat each other; that sex discrimination is not the only form of oppression in the world, and race, class, disability, and other factors can be just as important; and that lateral violence is not the same as fighting oppression.
I now realize I forgot to add; Both groups also fail to realize that men are not fucking evil, and that as human beings, they too possess the capacity for goodness, kindness, generosity, peace, and love. Men can hurt women, but they don’t have to.
People aren’t born inherently good or demonic. Neither biology or gender are destiny. We all get to choose how we respond to the positions we occupy, and whether we choose to collude with or resist the oppressive systems that want to co-opt us. There are good men in the world, and there can be more.
