While I’m still here, I also wanted to show y’all how to mass make roleplay icons through photoshop! There are other ways to do it but this is the most quick and effective way for me, and a way I’ve been using for years! I will be using some of the same methods as I did in my previous post about gifs in photoshop, so if I don’t get into too much detail here the questions you have might be answered there!
This takes about... 10 minutes at a base level, if you’re not doing individual icon fitting! It’s super fast and super effective!
Here we go!
First of all, you’re going to need to do the same as I said last post and acquire screencaps. If you don’t already have screencaps, I recommend SMPlayer! You can either get the 32 or 64 bit, it doesn’t matter, they both do the same thing. That, or you could use screencaps from anywhere! Since we’re not making gifs it doesn’t really matter what order, et cetera.
I’m going to say that for all intent and purposes, these screencaps have already been made into 100x100 icons. You’re free to resize them if you want! There’s also a way you could do this by getting regular sized icons and resizing each individual one yourself but frankly, that’s a whole lot of work. Anyway!
It starts off the same, get a folder and yoink all of your raw screencaps ( cut down to be a square, or rectangle, or whatever shape your icon is going to be ), and do the same first couple of steps as before! Scripts > load multiple DICOM files > select the file > create video timeline > convert to frame animation > make new frames from layers.
This is where things get different!
First of all, your delay should all be ONE SECOND, as opposed to 0.1. This will help import every single one of your icons rather than every 10th one, et cetera. If you have a psd, now is the time to add it to the top of the righthand screencap list.
Now, if you want just the regular icons with no bells and whistles, you CAN stop here! However, we also have the option to implement clipping masks again. It’s a little tricky, so bear with me.
At the very bottom on the righthand side where the screencaps are should go whatever base image you want to do. You can go absolutely buckwild with this, really. Do whatever! Be as extra as you want!
Once that’s there, you’re going to want to copy LITERALLY EVERYTHING BUT THAT BASE IMAGE. This INCLUDES the psd! ( Also if your psd is in a file you’ll need to remove it all so the clipping mask can work. )
Right click > create clipping mask...
Aand, it’s done! Sometimes the clipping mask doesn’t show up, all you need to do is highlight the bottom frames and click the eye button at the base icon, and then they’ll show up.
It’s important to note that some screencaps might need adjustment due to lighting / whatever. Make sure to go through all of your caps on the bottom and adjust the psd accordingly!
NOW TO SAVE. This is VERY IMPORTANT, so please read carefully!
Go to File > Export > Render Video.
At the render, almost every single thing about this should match. You can make a new folder for your icons or add them to a new folder. The “name” section will be whatever your separate icons are named, I normally go by batch so I’ll start off with 0 and the next batch I make will be 1, et cetera.
MAKE SURE ALL OF YOUR STUFF BELOW THAT MATCHES MINE. Photoshop image sequence, format PNG, starting 0 digits 1, document size ( whatever the dimensions of your icons are, mine are 70 x 70 ), Frame rate Custom, 1 FPS. All frames, Alpha Channel Straight - Unmatted, and 3D quality interactive.
When you’re done with that, press render and it will go to the designated folder, aaand...
TA-DA! You’re done!

Hey there friends! Here’s a little tutorial on how to make gifs in photoshop, because I know some people would like an easy way to do it!
NOTE: THIS IS JUST HOW I DO THINGS! If you find a better or easier way to do things I don’t hold you to this method, you do what you feel is best! Here we go!
First of all, you need a means of getting those screencaps for the gifs. for this, I recommend https://www.smplayer.info/en/downloads. ( SM player ). You can download the 32 bit or the 64 bit, they essentially do the same thing. You COULD input the mp4 directly but I personally use the screencaps for when I want to separate edits or make rp icons ( tutorial on that coming soon )! SMplayer does a pretty good job at explaining how to obtain those screencaps and you can see the part of the video playing alongside, so you can see exactly which part you’re screencapping. ( I’ve used this method since about 2014, so I promise it’s good. )
SO, once you have those screencaps, pick a small amount ( i say small, i normally do around 40 frames at first to see which gifs work and which ones don't ) and put them in to their own separate folder.
Then, you’re gonna wanna open up PS, go to file > scripts > load multiple DICOM files!
Select that file that you put all your caps in!
> Create video timeline
Once you’ve done that, you’re going to want to click on those three dots in the lower lefthand corner, that’s how you’re gonna convert to frame animation!
Then, with that dropdown menu at the bottom half of the screen, make the frames from layers
Highlight all of the bottom frames, make sure they're all 0.1 seconds, and the loop is set to “forever” and you've got your gif!
It's important to note that tumblr specifically only takes a certain amount of frames per gif per size. a normal 900 x 500 gif should take at MAX 30 frames, so you might wanna cut down on that size!
From here you're free to schlap on a psd of any sort on the top of the frames on the righthand side, not on the bottom.
IMPORTANT ALSO! when you're done with your gif, you're going to need to save for web as opposed to saving like you would a normal graphic.
Here you can make sure that all of your settings are correct and the gif flows nicely! Then you can save and be on your way!
TA DA! Congrats, you have your first gif!
For someone who wants just a wee bit more of a challenge ( and for promos and such! ) You can always use clipping masks for your gif! The way to do that is simple, the screencaps at the righthand side ( not the bottom ) at the very bottom of those frames, you can create a shape.
Now, highlight ALL OF THE FRAMES EXCEPT FOR THE SHAPE YOU WANT IT TO BE. Go to “create clipping mask aaand...
