Okay, okay, so short version:

Joker seduced Harley while he was in Arkham and she was his psychologist. He did so by manipulating sessions to make him seem pitiable.

Harley broke Joker out. Joker was originally going to kill her then, but fans had latched onto Harley Quinn’s new look and she was a fan favorite (mind you as I recall, she was originally introduced in BTAS, and then transferred to the comics later). So she ended up surviving his first murder attempt.

He decided that although annoying she could still be useful (since she’s actually brilliant, and at this point somewhat codependent). This leads to a string of horrific abuses and murder attempts. Including (in the TV show alone) throwing her through a window that is at *least* three stories up, choking her, beating her with a hammer, threatening her with one of his gag guns (which, depending on the gun, may or may not kill her in various ways), and attempting to get hyenas to eat her.

In the comics, it includes starving her, chaining her to a wall in a sewer on top of corpses of “failed Harleys,” poisoning her, leaving her in burning buildings, pushing her into the line of police fire, gaslighting her basically every time he fails to kill her, and the list goes on. When she becomes pregnant with her and Joker’s kid, she leaves for nine months, to her sister’s place, and gives birth there. She doesn’t tell Joker about the kid (and goes out of her way to prevent Joker from finding out). She tells Canary that it’s because Mr. J would be too busy for a kid, but if you pay attention to Harley’s behavior throughout the comic, the clear subtext is “My kid would end up dead or worse if Joker knew about her.”

Additionally, post break up, she notes he was abusive, says it wasn’t love, it was manipulation, and frequently describes it as the worst part of her life.

“Downstairs.Hey can you grab my turkey sandwich out of the fridge on your way down?”

Rolling her eyes with a giggle, Amy fulfilled his request and grabbed the sandwich, quickly heading downstairs soon after. By the time she had made it to her dad, she had a plate in one hand and the sandwich in the other, a couple of bites taken from it. 

“Hope you haven’t been down here too long.” she pondered, now standing behind Tony. “That’s how you go crazy~.” Her voice fluctuated in a spooky tone, imitating a bad version of a ghost.

Tony looked over from his spot next to his workbench and noticed the half eaten sandwich in his daughters hand, and he watched as she walked around him trying to be funny. “I have to deal with you every day. I’m already crazy” he joked turning around to face her and her crazy antics. “You know. When I asked for my turkey sandwich i kinda wanted the whole thing.” He reached for the sandwich in hand and bit down over where she had already ate, reaching out to the hologram he still had up with the other hand and closed the app. “So did you need something?”

“Correction, you asked Crazy to grab it for you, you never said she couldn’t have any.” Amy scowled when the sandwich was taken from her grasp and placed the plate on a nearby workbench. “And I didn’t even get a thank you,” she muttered under her breath, trotting over to wiggle her fingers in the hologram before it vanished. 

“But I do have a motive for finding you.” she continued, teasing at a strand of hair while touching the electronic console beside her. A finger brushed along a button on the keyboard and another hologram popped up where the last one was, showing off a suit from her dad’s line of work. “Have you ever been in love before?”

Ok she had him there. Plus like he could actually say no to his daughter for to long. He propped himself up on the desk he had just had the hologram on and watched as Amy moved around him to turn on another set next to him. He didn’t mind her getting into his stuff. He actually encouraged her to find interest in the techy side of things. though the next question through him off as his eyes moved away from the soft hologram of his newest suit.

“I uh what now?” He asked. Not that he didn’t hear her but, Why would she come down to ask him about being in love. Actually scratch that, he knew why a child would come talk to there parents about something like that. but he just didn’t want to believe it. “Whos the boy”

His questioning threw her off of her game and she almost tripped over a large and very noticeable cord on the floor, now pacing around the hologram. She had seen him play with them many times before, so to distract herself she pulled at the digitized gauntlet to remove it from the armor and snapped it around her forearm.

"W-What boy?" she asked, trying to keep a straight face in front of her father. She was not very good at lying. But feeling backed into a corner she tried to interrogate hi lm to keep it off of what he was already right about. "Who said anything about a boy? I mean, just a simple honest question that you fail to answer. You hiding something from me?"
