Unit 39
Milly Collins – Essay Unit 39 Record labels, Live Promotion, Music Publishing & Artists management; How they are linked and why they are important. Many artists believe that they’ve hit gold once they land a record deal. This may not be the case. When signing a contract you can easily get caught up in the thrill of it all scribbling your name down on the piece of paper but too often they forget to read the fine print. Labels and managers can promise a lot of things to the artist but will it actually pull off? Record Labels are supposed coordinate the follow, • Production • Manufacturing • Distribution • Marketing • Production • Copyrights Mammoth, corporate giants such as Universal, Island Records and Sony BMG; come with the full package. This is because they all have the necessary means to be able to get the artist to where they want to be. MONEY. STATUS. CONTACTS. When a major takes on artists they take time to turn the band/artist into a finely tuned and polished brand. Everything will be taken care of and all you have to do is turn up and starting singing. Indie labels; its so important to understand the structure of how they will produce your music, how they will promote you and your music to the right ears and most importantly of all how they will protect your music through the use of copy write terms. Unlike the “Majors” they tend to work in much smaller teams and focus solely on the music, sometimes ignoring the important issues of promotion and marketing of the music. It’s all well and good producing great music but if you don’t have the right resources to promote the artist then you could hit a wall. Record Labels; The bridge between artist and public. Labels will usually do most of the legwork in terms of recording, promoting and distributing the artist’s music. Live Promotion; Usually a label will hire external promotions companies to aid the artist in reaching critical acclaim. Music Publishing; Music publishers are responsible for ensuring the bands/artists/singers receive payment when there music is used commercially i.e Radio, Adverts and to help to monitor when songs are used. Artist Management; Management is an individual or company who helps guide artists. The responsibility of the manager is to oversee the day-to-day business of an artist; To advise and counsel artists on professional matters.

Task for Thursday- pt 2
The two movies I have chosen are: The broken circle breakdown and Ameliè I chose these two films as they both hold potential due to their storylines. the broken circle breakdown is already based on music as a country singer meets a girl who holds mutual musical interests and have a child who gets leukaemia. Ameliè is about a curious French girl’s life and the movie shows her growing up and her unusual experiences. They are both potential movies for atmospheric music because of their alternative storylines.

Task for Thursday- pt 1
1. My role in the composing process was originally to sing harmonies with jade to help sustain suspension. But due to changes with the melody in the group I played power chords to help thicken the texture in the piece. 2. I think our composed piece complements and represents the picture well. 3. Within our piece of music we could of changed or in this case added more suspension,by using more pauses and taking advantage of the use of dynamics
