News about Asher and Olivia
There were a lot of love connections and even more missed connections in the first season of All American. The will-they, won’t-they relationship the fans are most invested in, though, is the one between Olivia (Samantha Logan) and Asher (Cody Christian). And according to Logan, who spoke with a small group of reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Sunday, their relationship will continue to grow when the show returns for Season 2 this fall.
The actress also admitted there’s something special about their relationship that is being explored in the upcoming episodes, too. “I think, especially for Asher, she genuinely does have love for him, if not in a romantic way, then definitely as a friend,” Logan said. “She wants the best for him. She wants best for everybody in her life, but with Asher there’s a little something different there.”
Christian elaborated more on what makes their connection so attractive to viewers. “Out of everyone in Asher’s life, [Olivia] has been the one person who has stood by him through everything. She’s actually encouraged and inspired him to be the man she knows that he can be amidst all the bullsh– he’s been caught up in. Season 2 gives us the opportunity to expand on that relationship and see where they go as friends,” he explained.
“I think they have a lot of respect for each other,” he continued. “It’s going to be a very positive relationship. They’re going to encourage each other to grow and find themselves. We’ll see what happens this season.”
Are they really just friends, though? Their chemistry was off the charts, especially toward the end of the season, when both Asher and Olivia were doing some soul searching about the kind of people they really wanted to be and became true allies in that quest.
“They are two people that, aside from all the other characters on the show, really see each other for who they are, flaws and all, mistakes and all. There’s a level of acceptance that has always been there and continues to be there,” Christian said. “I think the audience responds to it. If we can give them that relationship and expand upon that, I think its our job.”
Of course, the build toward something more won’t come without drama and obstacles. Olivia was still dating Chris at the end of Season 1, but according to Christian, that relationship is going to come into question early on in Season 2.
“There’s a scene I can’t elaborate too much on, but very briefly it’s kind of, ‘Be there.’ [Asher] is the one that’s offering the type of advice he knows she would offer him in a similar situation,” he teased. “There’s a lot of character growth there. There’s a lot of development there to be explored. It’s really cool to see the 180 [degree] flip from Season 1 to Season 2, what we have written and what direction we’re taking Asher.”
